Pionair Curling and Lunch at the Lachine Curling Club By Russ Reynard
The afternoon of March 12 saw ninety-five Air Canada Pionairs at the Lachine
Curling Club. Twenty-four Pionair curlers were on the ice and the rest were
there to enjoy lunch in the company of fellow Pionairs. The curlers had lunch
at noon and were on the ice at one o'clock. A meal of lasagne, Caesar salad,
garlic bread, pecan pie and ice-cream was well prepared and presented by a
volunteer group of the Lachine Curling Senators.
After lunch we watched our six teams of Pionair men and women curlers.
The skips were Hugh Carre, Chris Jensen, Gord Thompson, Tom Sayer,
George Parsons and Reno Alfonso.
This year's winner was the team of skip Hugh Carre, third Lucy Brault,
second Bill Claridge and lead Paul Rougeau. They were presented with forest
green sweatshirts.
Everyone who attended had a great afternoon. Our one disappointment was the
No-show factor. One hundred and nineteen Pionairs had given their names and
registered to attend. On the day only ninety-five showed up.
The Curling Club is not a restaurant. We told them 119 and they prepared
food for 119. If you were a No-show that day, as an airline person you should
know better. Being a No-show costs money. Please Pionairs, we love to see you
at our events but you must register to allow us to prepare for you, and then
either attend or cancel.
I have been the convenor for this event for the last six years and now it is
time to pass the job on. Pionair Peter Kralka, a long time member of the
Lachine Curling Club has agreed, to take over the co-ordination next year.
Many thanks to all those who have helped me with this project over the years.
This year a special thanks to our Director Pamela Rosholt who worked hard to
help see that the day was a success. Next year, I'm on the ice!!
PIONAIRS ASSIST DREAM FLIGHT FUND RAISER by Marjorie Moon
Our Montreal District Pionairs assisted at a Lunch Hour "Fund Raiser" for
the Dream Flight, held in the corridor outside the Company Cafeteria before
Christmas. Permission to hold this sale was late so they were lucky Bill Sim,
Yvette Ste. Marie & Marjorie Moon were available on short notice.
The event went well. All of the wall maps of the World, souvenir aircraft
pins in boxed sets and individually were sold. Hand painted Xmas decorations,
some in boxed sets, made by an Air Canada employee in Ottawa, that could have
a child's name engraved or photos laminated on for a souvenir, went quickly.
There were also Dream Flight T-shirts and caps, as well as Christmas cake.
It was enjoyable to see familiar faces.

. Pionairs Golf Tournament.
An update from Frank Jones, Director Nova Scotia Pionairs.
There are still openings left for the Pionairs Golf Tournament in
Baddeck NS June 21/22. The cost breakdown. Registration $20.00 per Golfer
- Golf Package $135.00 per Golfer. Optional Banquet is $34.50 per Golfer.
NON Golfers charges. Ceilidh Party is $32.20 per Non Golfer and the
Banquet is $34.50 per Non Golfer.
Hotel space is getting critical.
We have over 90 Golfers registered. We are planing to have a Guest Division
for Active AC employees, those interested can send a cheque to Air
Canada Pionairs Cape Breton c/o Frank Jones, 78 Duffell Dr. Sydney NS ,
B1P 3G9. There will be probably 35-40 openings.
Those sending in a cheque after the Tournament is full will have their
cheque returned marked cancelled.

INDUSTRIES PASS TESTS FOR YEAR 2000 COMPUTER GLITCH
The securities, electric utilities, and airlines industries all
recently passed important Y2K testing. The most important phase
of the securities industry testing occurred on Saturday, when the
first trading day in 2000 was simulated. None of the
participating exchanges and organizations that provide the
securities industry with back-office services experienced Y2K
glitches. Although the Federal Aviation Agency tested only a
single flight at the Denver International airport, the test was
successful. The electric utility industry conducted a drill to see
how over 200 utilities in the U.S. and Canada would respond to a
Y2K disaster. On Friday, the utilities tested response to the loss of
voice and data communications used to monitor power production

Peter Pigott sneds this appeal -
I am an aviation author (in real life a member of the Department of
Foreign Affairs here in Ottawa) and beginning the research on my 8th book
on Canadian Aviation. You may have seen my others -
"Flying Colours" or "Wing Walkers: The History of Canadian Airlines."
When the publisher asked me to consider a history of TCA/Air Canada,
I think I have covered Air Canada in my other books like the smaller series
of biographies called "Flying Canucks " (the third will be out this Fall)-
and they are about as much as I could find. The real reason was that I know
the management of Air Canada has little interest in a book and that the
company possesses no archives at all.

Pilots from 11 airlines have launched the oneworld Cockpit Crew
Coalition to protect their interest as airlines keep on increasing the
level of collaboration between each other. Pilots from the four
oneworld alliance airlines, American Airlines, British Airways,
Cathay Pacific, Canadian Airlines and Qantas are represented in
the coalition, together with future alliance member Finnair and six
other airlines, some of which are expected to join the alliance at a
later date, Japan Airlines, Aerolineas Argentinas, Iberia, Lan Chile
and LOT Polish Airlines. So far, the coalition has decided to
"support one another through any legal means in case of a job
action," which means that pilots from one airline will refuse to
operate extra flights on a route normally flown by coalition
colleagues at another carrier when those pilots are on strike.

fee to renew the 32 page passport is now ca$111.80 and the courier fee
is ca$7.00. Fee must be paid by money order, or cash if collecting your

"NO PROBLEM, I CAN SEE FINE WITHOUT MY GLASSES":
A British Airtours International 757 suffered major tail damage in January
1998 when the pilot's glasses fell off during an aborted landing, according
to a just-released report from England's Air Accident Investigation Branch.
There were no injuries. The captain was downgraded to first officer.
Bert Bell sends this one for us -
"Changing careers".
A gyneocologist had a burning desire to change careers and become a
mechanic. She found out from her local tech college what was involved,
signed up for evening classes and attended diligently, learning all she
could. When time for the practical exam approached, she prepared carefully
for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill.
When the results came back, she was surprised to find that she obtained a
mark of 150%. Fearing an error, she called the instructor, saying "I dont
want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wondered if
there had been an error which needed adjusting." The instructor said, "
During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of
the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is
also worth 50% of the mark. And I gave you an extra 50% because you did all
