. Bill Fisher provides some information on events planned for the
Victoria Airport, BC. 60th anniversary.

July 2, 1999
Open House at 443 Squadron at their headquarters on the west side of the
field. The Aviation Museum and CFB Comox will send aircraft but at the
moment  the types and number are not known. Displays both in the hangar and
outside are  planned
August 21, 1999
British Columbia Aviation Museum Annual Open House and Hangar Dance.
Also the  official opening of the Museum's new annex building.
The day will start off with a pancake breakfast. There will be displays in
and out side the hangar all  day.
In the evening there will be the Hangar dance featuring the Swiftsure Band
(17 pieces). All the music will be from the war years 1939/46.
No idea how many visiting aircraft will be there.
September 10/12, 1999
This weekend will feature a de Havilland owners and RAA fly-in, and include
an Air Fair. Also the Battle of Britain remembrance service.
Planned are war-bird fly pasts of past and present aircraft.
Do not know at this time who will be taking part.
October 22.1999
This is the anniversary day of the airport.
Highlight will be a re-enactment of the arrival of the first airplane flight
to Pat Bay, and the raising of the R.C.A.F. ensign in a new ceremonial plaza
which will be officially dedicated at this time.
Who or how many VIP's will show up is not known now but there have been many
invites sent out.
July, 2000 (dates not firm)
A meeting of the CAF's B-17, He-111, and/or B-24 with the Lancaster from
Hamilton is planned. At the present time we have not heard from either party
as to dates or times.
This is only a rough scan of the happenings at the airport for the year.
By the way all the above is co-sponsored by the B.C.A.M. and the VAA.

. Found on the internet.
...OFFERING 777 TECHNOLOGY PLUS 747 HUMP
Boeing said the new airplane is basically a 777-300 with the forward
one-third of the fuselage widened by the addition of lateral bulges,
increasing the width of the First Class section by nearly 50%.
"Discussions with our airline customers indicated that the only feature
they would miss if we discontinued the 747 would be the characteristic
'hump' on the forward fuselage."

SELF-APPOINTED SAFETY CZAR DOGS GREYHOUND...
The DOT's former inspectress generalissimo Mary Schiavo brought traffic
to a halt recently in the Hope, Ark., bus station.  Schaivo apparently
bought a ticket to Truth or Consequences, N.M., and checked a bag, but
then failed to board the bus.  Instead, she hopped into a sound truck
operated by the local radio station and began a lengthy interview about
the dangers of bus travel with radio personality Lydia Profaslo.  Local
law enforcement officials used the westbound bus to run over her
luggage, hoping to disarm any potential bomb, but found only Schiavo's
resume.  What's next for Queen Mary?  Schiavo is reportedly setting her
sights on boating safety.

QANTAS Y2K WARINESS MAKES WAVES
Australian carrier Qantas Airlines has announced it might have to
curtail its service after December 31, 1999, due to safety concerns
related to the so-called millennium bug. In a year 2000 (Y2K) filing
with the Australian Stock Exchange, Qantas announced it is
"difficult to obtain accurate and detailed information from many
critical service providers" and that "some contingency plans may
involve reduced frequency of flights on some domestic and
international routes during the contingency period."
Qantas' announcement is the first by any airline that it will reduce
its service on New Year's Eve 2000 because of concerns about the
millennium bug. Jersey European Airways said in January 1999
that it would not be operating on January 1, 2000, but because it
expected extremely low demand for its flights on that day.

Delta has sold it entire fleet of 119 Boeing 727-200s to United
Technologies Corporation, who will convert them to freighters for re-sale.
About 20 727-200 aircraft will be retired in 1999, and the rest will follow
between 2000 and  2005. The agreement gives Delta flexibility in
accelerating or delaying  retirement dates.

. Brian Dunn from Toronto sends this information -
Air Canada is saving $20million a year and attracting many more
connecting passengers to Montreal since all of its operations were
consolidated at Dorval Airport last year.  Connection passengers to
London have jumped 623% and to Paris 158% since it is no longer
necessary to switch airports.

Air Canada recently announced startup of two new routes.
On May 17th they will begin non-stop service between Calgary and Chicago
with an A319 aircraft and code-share it with United Airlines.
On June 21st a daily Toronto-San Diego flight will be launched also using
an A319.

. Smilie.
A UNIQUE USE OF AIRCRAFT:
We're not quite sure what to make of this, but it should make for great
conversation Monday morning.  All we know is that it happened in Zephyrhills,
Fla., and what's included in the FAA report:
"1969 Fairchild-Hiller FH-1100 helicopter was being repositioned in the
pilot's back yard to water the lawn when it lifted off on the left skid and
flipped over onto its side, other circumstances are unknown."
Helicopters are versatile, but we must admit this particular application
was a first for us.
