. Need to know.
Pass abuse complaints are rising re travel partners when they are
not accompanied by employee or retiree e.g. dress code violations,
yelling at airport agents, demanding upgrades. We are all asked to
thoroughtly brief travel partners on how to act and dress when using
this priviledge - or it will be lost!
In a speech at the semi-annual meeting of the Pionairs (USA) held
during the Pionairs AGM in Vancouver during April, Vicky Benoit, Manager
Industry Travel and Linda Kwoon, Industry Travel confirmed the following -
. Travel passes would continue to be valid for travel on Continental.
. There are no plans to institute a proceedure for paid upgrades when
travelling on a pass.
. Arrangements for using passes with other airlines are not uniform
since negotioations must recognise the different requirements of
each airline.
. Airport transfer taxes are determined by each airport, making it
immpractical to include such informationin the travel booklet.

. Your co-pilot recently took a short trip -
Had a nice cruise from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on BC Ferries -
a 15 hour daylight trip with lots of spectacular scenery on the Inside
Passage. We saw a pod of Grey Whales, and Killer Whales, some seals and a
some Dolphins. The vessel was very lightly loaded, only 30 vehicles, and
not too many passengers. We were able to have a group of 8 reclining
chairs and a table in a cubicle next to the windows. The food was the usual
BC ferry fare - yes exactly! However we survived.
We were visiting our eldest son and the grandchildren who are living in
P.R., so it was a nice way to end the mini cruise to stay with them for
four days during the long weekend.
However - it poured with rain while we were there, so we did not do any
real sight seeing, except go around a canning factory museum which was
interesting. We had plans to visit the Queen Charlotte Islands, but did
not consider the cost worthwhile just to have the same, or perhaps worse,
weather.
We drove to Smithers for an overnight, but the weather was cold, so we
drove on to Prince George for 2 nights and spent the day in Barkerville
which is an abandoned town from the gold rush era. It was our second such
visit, and had a great time there, although a tad chilly with over 4 foot
of snow still between the buildings and alongside the road.
As the weather was not the best, we headed for home, where the weather is
always much better, with sunshine everyday, except when the clouds get in
the way!
We did see our complement of wild life during the trip, including 3 black
bears, a few deers and some teenagers.

. News from the districts.
The Montreal District Pionairs -
The Mtl District held its spring buffet at the Royal St Lawrence on May
27th. with 125 pionairs attending. The MC Pionair Russ Renard assisted by
Yvetee St Marie who did the French translation welcomed everyone on behalf
of the director and the committee. After the buffet Russ introduced
Pionair Leo Paul Rodrique who sang several songs from Broadway Musicals.
After a standing ovation he sang an encore to the delight of those
present. Russ then introduced our Director Pam Rosholt who made a few
comments and she thanked committee members who recently retired from the
Mtl District those being Russ Reynard & Jacques Gaucher ( in attendance )
and Andre Gregoire & Brian Wright who were not present. Then on behalf of
the national Executive she pesented Certificates of Appreciation to Past
Director Herb Guilfoyle & Real Henri. Ben Vezina accepted on behalf of
Real who was unable to attend . Russ then proceeded with the drawing of
door prizes with the winners as follows.

. Last NetLetter we gave you some information about the Dreams Take Flight,
perhaps you would want know about the aircraft CF-TCC -
The L10A was the first type of aircraft ever flown by Air Canada's
pioneering predecessor, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA). The aircraft is not
a replica, but the original reconstructed aircraft. It was the last of 5
purchased by TCA and sold to the Canadian Government in 1939, who turned it
over to the RCAF as part of the war effort. Following that, it was sold
again, and went from owner to owner during some 40 years.
In 1975, a retired Air Canada employee recognised it at a Texas Air Show
when he saw the registration CF-TCC through the paintwork. Air Canada
repurchased the aircraft in 1983 and rejuvenated and refurbished it. Pratt
& Whitney Canada arranged for the complete overhaul of its two engines and
for furnishing accessories and spares.
The aircraft holds 9 passengers and a crew of 2, the wing span is 55 foot,
Length is 38 foot 7 inches and it cruises at 160 mph.

AIRCRAFT ORDERS
Lufthansa has placed a firm order for 60 728JET from Fairchild Aerospace
(formerly Fairchild Dornier) valued at USD 1.6 billions. The airline also
took options for a further 60 aircraft. The 728JET is a 70-seat stretched
derivative of Fairchild's 328JET regional jet aircraft. The 32-seat 328JET
is a redesigned version of Dornier's 328 turboprop aircraft fitted with
turbofan engines.
Dutch carrier Transavia Airlines has placed an order with Boeing for four
Next Generation 737-800s and 12 options. Transavia operates scheduled and
charter flights with an all Boeing 737 fleet.
Italy's Air Europe has joined the Qualiflyer Group alliance led by Swissair.
The other companies in the alliance are Sabena, Crossair, AOM, Air Littoral,
TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air and
Tyrolean Airlines. Swissair has also confirmed it is in talks with South
African Airways (SAA) regarding the later joining Qualiflyer. If the
arrival of SAA into the Qualiflyer Group is concerned, this will be the
first blow
to the Star Alliance that had counted on adding SAA as one of its members.

Air Canada said it will not resume suspended flights to Delhi,
which it had earlier planned to restart in October.
If you are planning an Alaska cruise out of Vancouver, why not start

A nice lady just called. She needed to know how it was possible
that her flight from Detroit left at 8:20am and got into Chicago at 8:33am.
I tried to explain that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois, but she
could not understand the concept of time zones.
Finally I told her the plane went very fast, and she bought that!
A woman called and asked, "Do airlines put your physical description on your
bag so they know whose luggage belongs to who?" I said, "No, why do you
ask?" She replied,"Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag
on my luggage that said FAT, and I'm overweight, is there any connection?"
After putting her on hold for a minute while I "looked into it"
(I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the city code for
Fresno is FAT, and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on
her luggage.
