. Stories wanted.
Jim Smith at Air Canada asks -
I was wondering if you might post a rqst to any retired Pilot
that  flew the Lancastrians (we had 8) during WW II.
I have been toying with the idea of compiling a book, that would
be  a collection of photos and stories written by the employees
of  TCA/Air Canada.
It is probably a few years off but unfortunately these gentlemen
are getting up in age and may not be with us, when I actually
start  the book.
Thanks in advance.

. News from the districts.
In the Summer edition of the Vancouver Island newsletter was the following
information from Peggy Clark, AirBC Customer Service Manager  -
Following the recent closure of the Air Canada Victoria ticket office,
Peggy points out that, unlike the CTO, the priority is to board and depart
flight on time. The gate agents primary function is to board flights, and
checking in at the gate is not recommended as there is only one busy agent
there. Itinerary changes for standby passengers is second in priority to
boarding the flight. So please be patient and wait until your name is
called. If you plan to travel on the new transcon service YYJ-YYZ - please
allow a little extra time for check-in and security clearance. Advance
booking is proving this flight to be very popular. As much as possible all
travel itineraries should be arranged when you are registering with the
Employee Call Centre.

. A memory from your co-pilot -
The Canadair water bomber -
It was in the early 80's I think. I worked at the Dorval Base in the
Computer building, 3 rd floor. Our section overlooked to the east and had
the view of the base road and the Canadair hanger.
One day I was in the office of Andy McCready, my supervisors formulating
policy, which really means were were chewing over the latest results of the
Habs and Expos! I was gazing out of the window and noticed the group of
people on the roof of the Canadair hanger, I then saw the yellow water
bomber flying just a few feet above the runway. As it reappeared flying east,
I watched its progress as the aircraft gradually rose until it came to the
end of the runway, then it banked to the left to make a turn back on a
reciprocal course. I said to my supervisor something like 'Andy that aircraft
is going to crash'.
He looked around just as the left wing hit the ground and the plane
disappeared in a cloud of dust. A few minutes later we saw the pilot emerge
from the aircraft, and the crash tenders speeding down the runway.
The rescue vehicles did not realize that the crash had happened on the
east side of the route 13 cut, and they had to retrace their path and swing
around onto the base road to get to the crash site.
We learned afterwards that the plane was giving a demonstration of its
capabilities, and had just dump water on the runway in front of the
dignitaries on the roof.
Of all the years I have spent in the airline industry, that is the only time
I had witnessed an aviation accident.

. Found on the internet.
BRITISH MAN SENTENCED FOR STUBBORNESS:
A new twist on air rage: Neil Whitehouse, 28, was flying from Madrid to
Manchester in September 1998 when he refused to turn off his mobile phone,
despite repeated crew requests.  Judge Anthony Ensor called Whitehouse's
behavior "stubborn and ignorant," and sentenced him to one year in prison.

In a further development, the British Government are so concerned with
the     increase of air rage that there is a bill before the house which
will make a    charge of air rage a criminal offence rather than a civil
offence, and
greatly increase the jail time and/or the financial penalty.

British Airways introduces toddler seats on its B-747 aircraft.
According to The Vancouver Sun, on August 1, oneworld member British
Airways will introduce the world's first airline seat designed for
children under two years old. When travelling on long-haul flights in
any class of service, the carrier's youngest customers can sit in the
specially designed adjustable seats_a parent's knee or bassinet will
be a thing of the past. This service will be available at no extra
charge.

. For those affectionadoes of CF-TCC -

Donovan Lowry writing in the RAPCAN netletter issued by Duane Frerichs -
" I don't want to boast, or anything like that, Bill, but I have a record
in my log book of flying  in -TCC on July 15th,1944 as F/O to Captain
Bowden, for two hrs. and 11 min. day! Sounds to me as though it was a
practice flight for the captain. In those days, we used the aircraft instead
of simulators, you will remember.
Anyhow, it was good to hear you take part in this lively discussion.
I guess our pal Capt. Ray Lank will have flown here more than anyone else in
our company. At anyrate, it ensures I am now an old man, to know I flew in
her. By the way, Rube Hadfield once assured me I never flew in -TCC, I was
not with the company long enough!
Cheers,"    DJ.  Donovan Lowry <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

Your co-pilot of the NetLetter spotted this item -
The Science Museum in the UK is moving their Lockheed 10A Electra from
Wroughton to South Kensington to go on display in a new permanent aviation
gallery to be opened in 2000. Built in 1935, one of 148 manufactured, this
Electra was acquired from Florida in 1982 and flown across the Atlantic.
Registered as G-LIOA on May 6th 1983 and painted as NC5171N.
Another Lockheed 10 registered NR16020 flown by Linda Finch around the
world to mark the 60th anniversary in 1997 of Amelia Earhart's tragic attempt
will probably end up in the Smithsonian Museum.

Some years ago my son worked as a Piper/Doorman at the Banff Springs
Hotel.
He has just sent along the following -
Questions are quite typical of what we would hear in Banff.
Are those mountains always there?
No we send them every year to Saskatchewan to be cleaned.
How much does a mountain weigh?
With or without snow mam.
Do these doors go in?
Do these stairs go up.
How much does it cost to purchase a mountain?
Well I could sell you that one for $25,000.  Are you interested?
How do you say Banff?
Ban FEH FEH!
