Subject: Recommended Book
I have just read an outstanding library book, "Hard Landing", the epic
contest for power and profits that plunged the US airlines into chaos, by
Thomas Petzinger, Random House, 1995. Most timely in view of proposed Air
Canada merger. It deals with the last generation of airline executives, the
disappearance of Pan American, Eastern and People Express, the rough
competitive tactics of American Airlines and Sabre, top executives
switching from one company to another, the success of Southwest, etc. Once
I started reading, it was difficult to put down!  Suggest check a big
library for it.  Ross Smyth This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. From the RAPCAN newsletter by Duane Frerichs -
*** The man who loves airports

If you have ever suffered a 10-hour flight delay and spent the night
at an airport, spare a thought for "Mr Alfred" - he has been living
at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport for the past 11 years. Mehran
Karimi Nasseri, a 54-year-old Iranian exile, took up residence on
a red plastic bench in Terminal One in 1988 after being refused
political asylum by the French authorities. Since then he has
become one of the airport's more familiar landmarks, keeping his
belongings neatly stacked on a luggage trolley. This week he was
finally granted a passport and announced that he would be moving
on elsewhere. Twenty-four hours later he had changed his mind.
"I'm not quite sure what I want to do, stay at Roissy or leave,"
he said. But it is unlikely he will be allowed to remain. Philippe
Bargain, the chief of the Roissy emergency medical unit, who
befriended him, said that he would now be asked to leave.

. Found on the internet.
RESIDENTS NEAR CALIFORNIA AIRPORT COMPLAIN ABOUT MOVIE-STAR JETS:
John Travolta and his Boeing 707 are getting way too much attention lately.
Travolta is among several Hollywood film stars whose personal jets are
causing residents near the Van Nuys, Calif., airport to complain about
noise.  The residents asked the L.A. city council to create a no-fly
zone, but the council said the stars could keep flying.

HOW ABOUT A BOEING BIZJET UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE?

DEJA VU -
Resurrected Pan American World Airways to resume operations on Oct. 7.

RUSSIAN PILOT MISTAKES HIGHWAY FOR RUNWAY:
A Russian pilot flying a Tupelov 134 carrying 40 passengers was at 300 feet,
lining up to land on the busy Jerusalem-Tel Aviv Highway, when controllers
at Ben Gurion Airport got his attention and told him to abort.
The pilot went around and landed on a runway.  Israel's Civil Aviation
Authority said the pilot wasn't drunk, but had a very poor command of
English.  The BRZ Airlines plane makes a weekly flight to Israel
-- stay away from it.

. Terry's travel tips.

DON'T MISS THESE TIPS!
Last week, the Department of Transportation gave out a list of tips for
folks who plan to be traveling at year's end.
Our favorite: When you get a parking-lot ticket, check the date so you
won't be charged for a car parked in short-term since 1900.  Don't let
that Y2K bug bite!

When in London England and looking for details of rates for airline staff:
Radisson       0800-374411
Hilton         0800-856 8003
Forte          0345-404040
Best Western   0800-393130
Marriott       0800-221222
Sheraton       0800-353535
Holiday Inn    0800-897121

If, while in the UK,  you need to send a picture to Prague, an armoire to
Amsterdam or a bed to Belfast why not use the services of British Midland
Cargo? Friends of British Midland staff can benifit from a special rate of
50%  of the published tariff. So get friendly with a British Midland
Airlines  employee!
