Subject: Retiremnent Seminar
For the second year in a row I have been asked to help out in the
upcoming retirement seminar in Calgary Nov 23. The upcoming retirees love
to hear stories from those already retired and I would like to ask your
readers to help me out with the following questions which are asked at
the seminars.
Wanted:
Retirees wishing to share their experiences on retirement that can be
shared with upcoming retirees at seminars.
. Were you prepared financially?
. Did you receive enough information from the company before making your
decision to retire?
. Did you suffer any health problems soon after retirement?
. Did you change residence and regret it afterward?
. Did you join clubs, do volunteer work?
. Did you travel a lot?
. Were you lonely, Depressed or Scared?
. Are you a snow bird?
. Have you come across information that would be helpful as far as
banking, health insurance, length of stay in another country etc?
Anything you can share would be most appreciated.

. Margaret Cantwell sends another story -
I was talking to Bill McNutt recently ...he was at Victoria
Airport for many years (everyone knows Bill). He does not have a computer
so I'll be giving him copies of "Between Yourselves" as I do for
Allan (Hoppy) Hopkins who was also at Vic. Airport for many years and I
am sure everyone knows "Hoppy".
Bill passed me this this little item to send on to you -
"In the early 60's it was impossible to get RN's (stewardesses) on the
Vancouver - Victoria run. There was a great shortage at that time
of RN's. The Co-pilot had to do a check in the cabin of the seat belts.
Also Bill tells me that one day Ken Cantwell (Vancouver, my late husband)
acted as "stewardess on the Vancouver Victoria run!" Ken did not tell me
about that!!
If any other Pionairs do not have a computer or access to E Mail - let
me know and I'll gladly see you get a copy. Also anything to contribute,
I'll e-mail in.

We'll be back at Timberland this fall - the same location we met at last
Spring. On the new part of the Trans Canada from Fredericton or Saint
John, take exit 418; from Moncton take exit 432 and follow the signs to
Penobsquis, Timberland is on the old highway near or beside Animal Land.
The Inn will need a head count by Monday, Oct. 25th, so please let your
contact know whether you and your spouse will be there.
Monthly Luncheons.
Now that the golf season is over, the Saint John retirees get together
once a month for lunch, usually on the last Thursday of the month and
usually at a different location each month. A phone committee advises the
Saint John group of the date and location, but all New Brunswick or
visiting retirees and spouses are welcome.
Frank Cogger (672-2159) is the organizer and he can give you details of
an upcoming lunch.
PARTY 2000
-and it will be a great party!
It's the AGM in sunny Vancouver, April 28,29 & 30.
You'll enjoy the Sheraton Wall Centre, a first class hotel in a central
location, and best of all, you'll enjoy getting together again with
old friends - and making new ones.
One of the highlights at this year's meeting was a question and answer
session with representatives from the pass bureau.
Calling all Golfers.
Earlier this summer, the Cape Breton District held a very successful
Pionairs Golf Tournament at Baddeck NS. Well over a hundred Pionairs and
Spouses enjoyed Maritime hospitality at parties and banquets, played a lot
of golf and lost a lot of golf balls. Next June 13-14 the tournament is
moving to the opposite coast and will be hosted by the Vancouver Island
Pionairs at Sidney B.C. Take it from someone who went to Baddeck last
summer - you don't need to be a low handicap golfer to have a lot of fun!
Further information, and registration forms will be available at
the luncheon.
Dreams Take Flight.
By now you will have received your payroll deduction form for charitable
donations, with Dreams Take Flight now added to the list. Earlier this
month a flight operated from Halifax with children from our district on
board. Let's support this very worthwhile cause.

Pionair Ross Smyth of Montreal is a member of the board of directors of the
Canadian Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) and is trying to recruit more
airline people into this excellent national movement to preserve our
aviation heritage
Members receive a quarterly Journal and national newsletters. Chapters
exist in major cities and the CAHS is now trying to expand into smaller

. Millennium.
When the chimes of Big Ben in London England ring out the old year at
midnight on December 31st 1999 and welcome in the new millennium, where
is one of the places to celebrate? The only possible answer is London's
Dome, official partner is British Airways. As well as a huge variety of
attractions to keep visitors busy in the innovative themed 'zones', the
Dome will be an international showcase for the best of British design and
ingenuity.
With the biggest roof in the world, covering 20 acres, it could hold
18,000 double decker buses, two Wembley stadiums or 13 Royal Albert Halls.
The base area is 25 times greater than the Taj Mahal with more than a
million square feet of fabric covering. Tickets are now available from a
booking line, internet, railway and bus stations, travel agents, tour and
coach operators and the UK National lottery retailers. All tickets must be
prepurchased. The closet Underground station is North Greenwich, the
journey time from Waterloo station is 12 minutes.
In a further millinnial celebration, British Airways is building the London
Eye, the world's tallest observation wheel on the South Bank of the Thames
opposite the Houses of Parliament. It will rotate every 20 minutes to
give 960 people a breathtaking view of London and, on a clear day, up to 30
miles away.

. British Airways has launched a scheme which allows travellers to book
flights from the comfort of their own home.
The airline has signed a deal with broadcaster NTL in the UK, to use its
interactive television service. This will enable subscribers to the Travel
Channel to arrange holidays through their TV sets using the remote
control. Viewers can get access to everything from BA Holidays brochures,
destination details, flight arrivals and timetable information.
They can also browse through the latest World Offer fares,
book BA Holidays and seats on flights 24 hours a day.

Canada 3000 is the first Canadian airline to install EGPWS - enhanced
ground proximity warning system. A new Airbus A330-300 is the first jet
to carry the safety equipment. The airline is to refit its entire fleet
of Airbus and Boeing aircraft over the next year.
A tribute flypast to aviator King Hussein of Jordan, who died of cancer
last February was staged at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF
Fairford in Gloucestershire this summer. The King's first aircraft -
a De Havilland Dove presented by the RAF in 1950, was joined by four
Jaquar jets flying in 'missing man' formation - aviations highest mark
of respect. The King was taught to fly by the RAF, and he was patron to
the Tattoo from 1983-1989. He was lead pliot of a nine man demonstration
team called the Hashemite Diamonds, flying Hawker Hunters. Visiting the
show at the controls of his Lockheed TriStar, he would greet crowds with
a message relayed over a loudspeaker.
