Donkey Power!
The story is of a Lockheed 10A Electra which crashed in the Outback of
Australia in 1942. According to the article, the drama began with a
family's escape from the Japanese invasion of Singapore. Frank Colquhoun
a retired aviation engineer from High Wycombe Australia said the English
family's releif at reaching Australia turned to alarm when their next
flight from Darwin to Broome, crash-landed in a black soil bog 80 kms
north-east of Derby. Mr Colquhoun was called up from Perth to get the
plane airborne again and he and two men worked for a month, camping next
to the plane, before deciding that the only way to move it from the bog
was to use a team of donkeys. The passengers included a mother and her
two sons, one of whom was quite ill, and an emergency makeshift runway
had to be constructed by the salcage engineers to enable a small Cessna
to land and rescue the family. This they managed to do reasonably quickly
but it was a very hard task for the donkeys to tow the plane across an
8 foot wide creek, which was about 6 foot deep. Three crossings had to
be built. two for the aircraft wheels and a central one for the donkeys.
The whole operation took about 5/6 weeks.

AIR CANADA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF SERVICE TO BARBADOS
50 years ago, Air Canada, then known as Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA),
inaugurated weekly passenger services between Canada and Barbados when its
40-passenger propeller aircraft, the Canadair DC-4M ``North Star'', landed
on the coral surfaced runway in the early morning of December 3rd, 1949.
Flight time out of Toronto was 15 hours with stops in the Bahamas and
Jamaica.
This winter, Air Canada will offer daily non-stop Toronto-Barbados
service operating a new 284-passenger Airbus A340, with a supplemental
service on Sundays from Montreal with an Airbus A320.
Today, Air Canada's non-stop flight from Toronto to Barbados takes
5 hours and 10 minutes.

November 25, 1999 - Smelly Passenger Delays SAS Airliner Takeoff
OSLO, Norway - A smelly passenger held up the takeoff of a Scandinavian
Airlines System flight from London for six hours as technicians scoured
the plane for a phantom fault.
SAS evacuated all the passengers from the Oslo-bound flight on Monday
after cabin crew noticed a pungent oily odour which they feared was a
fuel leak or fire. But technicians found nothing amiss.
Airline staff eventually discovered that the source of the smell was a
passenger with a new oilskin coat. Oilskin is a cloth made waterproof
with an oil treatment, and new garments often smell.
November 26, 1999 - Plane Goes Down In Lake Winnipeg
WINNIPEG, Canada - The search continues for a single-engine plane that went
down in Lake Winnipeg near Reindeer Island on Thursday.
Milton Menzies the pilot of this missing plane was a pilot for Air Canada
from about 1966 to 1983. Milt was from Baysville, ON. He resigned from Air
Canada as a DC 9 Captain to take up flying missionary duties with the
Shantymen administering to natives in the interlake region of Manitoba.

HOLIDAY CHEER -- WINDOWS FOR REMY:
In Remy, France, 55 years ago, the U.S. 383rd fighter squadron strafed a
German munitions train. The train exploded, shattering nearly all the
town's windows -- including seven of stained glass in the 13th-century
Church of St. Denis. Efforts were made to raise $200,000 to replace
those windows -- and many contributed to the cause.

AREN'T YOU GLAD BILL HAS HIS OWN PLANE?
Next time you fly Air Zimbabwe, be sure to check who's riding in business
class. The passengers of a recent Flight UM9724 from Zimbabwe to London
were dismayed when their plane made a six-hour unscheduled diversion
to Madrid to drop off Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, causing many
to miss their connections. Evidently the government didn't feel any
obligation to notify passengers or travel agents in time for them to make
alternate arrangements.
