I later became supervisor, then sales representative,
and terminated in 1992 as ramp supervisor in YUL.
I now live in the Eastern Townships, Quebec.

. Remember when?
The forgotten airliner is 50!
The BOAC Argonaut aircraft, while not having the graceful lines of the
Lockheed Constellation or the spaciousness of the Boeing Stratocruiser,
upheld from 1949 to 1960 BOAC's African, Far Eastern and, for a period,
the South American routes.
The Argonaut was the first all land plane service from London, England
to Hong Kong and Tokyo, reducing travel time from five to three days.
It was the Argonaut that came twice to the rescue of BOAC, filling the
gaps, first when the Comet 1 was grounded and again when the Brittanias
were several years late coming into service.
Two of the 22 aircraft were lost in fatal accidents but both were
caused by bad weather. Argonauts were built by Canadair in Canada using
the airframe of the Douglas DC4. Unlike the DC4, they were pressurized
and powered by four Rolls Royce Merlin engines.
The 'Canadairs' were also called 'Northstars' of which
Trans-Canada Air Lines had 29 delivered between Nov 1946 to Feb 1952.

. Recently, the national press gave coverage to an Air Canada flight from
Paris via Manchester, Halifax and to Toronto.
The flight was delayed for 24 hours, mainly due to a strike at Paris, and
an unplanned but legal crew change at Halifax.
However, there did not appear to be any mention about ALL the other
scheduled flights which operated that day - presumably they all departed
and arrived on time - and safely!

. News from the districts.
Sheila Moscoe sends information about the Toornton Pionairs Luncheon -
I attended our annual Pionairs Xmas Luncheon on Sunday, December 12
at the Bristol Place Hotel near Toronto airport.
There were approximately 158 in attendance. There was a reception from
1100hr where we mixed and mingled while we were entertained by a
singer/pianist.
The luncheon was held in the adjacent room.
Saville Hambleton was our guest speaker and we were all pleased to
meet him. The luncheon and Dreams Take Flight draws were well handled
(I won 2 prizes!!). Fraser O'Shaughnessy and his committee did an
excellent job. I'm proud to be a Pionair.

The November issue of Aircraft Illustrated has an article on Air Canada's
DC-9, called 'Nine Lives' and another article on the same subject by
Capt Jim Adam and Capt Sandy Bateman describing a flight from
Toronto-Raleigh-Toronto in Fin 707 CF-TLH.

It's been quite awhile since I've written to you about our monthly
gathering. Well, I just wanted to let you know that we had a fantastic
turnout at our last T2CK (Terminal 2 Coffee Klatch) of the century! It
was so good to see everyone again. We had a few get well cards to sign
for Issy Killen and Hughie Wilkinson. And we gave our waiter Mike a
bottle of wine and cash in his Xmas card. The manager of the Golden
Griddle also made a presentation to me of more food vouchers!! We are
looking forward to many, many more get-togethers of our former Toronto
airport sales employees. For those of you who are new to this, we meet
on the first Tuesday of every month at 1100hr at the Golden Griddle,
Airway Centre on Airport Road, opposite the terminals. For $2.00,
unlimited coffee and tea, it's a bargoon!

. Stories of the Avro Arrow just don't go away!
Rather incredibly, an engine from an Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow has been
discovered in the RAF Cardington Storage hanger in the UK (the old R100
airship hanger) where, presumably it has lain for the past 40 years.
All parts of the Arrow were supposedly destroyed after cancellation by the
Canadian Government in 1959. The engine, 6 metres in length by 1.2 metres
in diameter, was rumoured to be 'somewhere in England' as the PS-13
Iroquois, and indigenous design developed by Avro's Orenda engine division.
The engine had been lent to Bristol Siddeley to assist in the development
of the Olympus, subsequently used in the Concorde. The RAF museum has
agreed that the engine can be returned to Canada.

The Stealthfreighter is coming - from Russia.
A new super-quiet cargo jet made its debut in the UK last month, and
is to be marketed as the Stealthfreighter.
The Russian-built twin-engined Tupolev 204-100C can carry 25 tonnes.
The jet's quietness, hence the stealth tag, will allow it to operate
at night into noise-sensitive airports in Britain and Europe.
The introduction of the TU-204 is a coup for Gatwick-based airline
management specialist AirRep.
New York from London, England in an hour by 'scramjet'!
A revolutionary hypersonic engine being developed by Britain and
Australia could cut travel from London to New York to less than an hour.
The supersonic combustion ramjet engine, known as 'scamjet', could
poweraircraft to 5,500 mph - around 4 times faster than Concorde.

Your eyes aren't playing tricks_we've modified the Air Canada logo.
The logo was slightly changed to further strengthen and enhance its
visual impact. The new logo is more compact, with the characters
appearing closer together. In addition to the standard horizontal and
vertical logos, we've also developed a new "stacked" one, designed for
square applications. To promote awareness of our membership in the
Star Alliance network, a joint Air Canada/Star Alliance logo was
created which will appear in many different communication pieces.

First one off....
While working in Cordova, Alaska a passenger came in at 0600 with
his arm in a cast. He said the Captain of the ship he was on wanted
him to fly to Seattle as soon as possible to get his arm looked at.
The Captain was to come in and pay for his ticket.
Fine I told him, Coach or First Class? "First Class" he said,
"The Captain wants me there right away."
(I guess 10 feet from coach makes him correct?)
