. Saville Hambleton sends this message -
Subject: A Truly Merry Christmas
Hi to All Pionairs;
Well what a difference four months and 1.2 billion dollars can make
to your life.
The Air Canada Family and particularly the Pionairs have gone from
grave concern and uncertainty over that period of time, to today,
where....Air Canada is where it deserves to be.... and has earned the
right to be.... Canada's National Flag Carrier.
To those people who designed the Company's strategy during this period
our congratulations on a job truly well done.
To Sue Welscheid, A/Vice President Human Resources and Barb Walker,
her assistant, our thanks for keeping the Pionairs in constant touch
with new developments as we all progressed through this time.
Now that a successful conclusion is at hand, It is not trite to say our
lifestyle is preserved.
For our organization, which has a strange undefinable bond, other than
spending a lifetime working for a company who's prime purpose was to hurl
people through the atmosphere in an aluminum tube at hundreds of miles
per hour, it is time to move on to the next Millenium with a renewed
commitment to maintain that bond with Pionair friends and colleagues.
Barbara and I wish all Pionairs, and members of the Air Canada Family,
a well deserved and relaxed Merry Christmas and the universal
expectation that the New Year will bring peace and happiness to all.

. Like to know!
Statement issuede by Air Canada December 21, 1999   4.30 pm
Air Canada unveils plans for major service enhancements
Air Canada today unveiled initial plans for major
enhancements in air service for Canadi>ns. after reviewing
the combined networks and fleets of Air Canada and Canadi>n
Airlines, Air Canada has produced a plan that streamlines
schedules and reallocates excess capacity, resulting in
significant air service improvements for Canadi>ns in
domestic, transborder and international markets.

In particular, Air Canada and Canadi>n Airlines  revamped
network calls for the introduction of new non-stop service
between a number of cities across Canada, currently requiring
consumers to transfer at hub airports such as Toronto or
Montreal before arriving at their final destination.  the
planned new schedule will create new non-stop links and
substantially reduce travel time for consumers and freight
forwarders.
Streamlining a combined Air Canada-Canadi>n network will
result in operational efficiencies that will be passed on to
consumers through more non-stop service to more communities
at competitive prices," Robert said
Domestic
Air Canada and Canadi>n Airlines will implement new optimal
schedules for daily flights on main domestic routes. changes
will target routes where there is substantial surplus
capacity, while continuing to provide conveniently timed
flights with the right aircraft size.
By streamlining schedules and reallocating excess capacity,
Air Canada will introduce non-stop service between
Montreal-Edmonton, Vancouver-Halifax and Toronto-Victoria
year-round, thereby bypassing hub airports and dramatically
reducing flying time for consumers. in addition, schedules
will be adjusted to offer hourly flights on Toronto-calgary
and Toronto-Vancouver routes.  consumers will also benefit
from increased flights on Montreal-Winnipeg, Montreal-Calgary
and Ottawa-Winnipeg routes, as well as year-round widebody
service on Montreal-Vancouver.
AirBC, Air Ontario, Air Nova and Canadi>n Regional Airlines
will similarly optimise their schedules to and from regional
points. communities served by Air Canada, Canadi>n or their
respective wholly owned subsidiaries will continue to be
served.
A number of under-utilised jet aircraft will be reallocated
to address the growth on transborder routes.
Transborder
Air Canada will continue to expand its transborder services,
consolidating its position as the airline of choice linking
Canada and theUnited States.  Air Canada plans to launch new
transborder routes including Montreal-Denver CO,
Toronto-Greensboro NC, Toronto-Ontario CA and Toronto-Orange
County CA (the latter two serving the Los Angeles area). in
addition, Air Canada will increase flights on a number of
transborder routes including Calgary-Chicago IL,
Ottawa-Washington DC National and Toronto-Las Vegas NV.
International
Canadi>n consumers will benefit from increased direct access
to major cities world-wide. Air Canada will launch daily
Toronto-Tokyo, Toronto-Hong Kong and Toronto-Mexico flights,
subject to obtaining required designation, traffic rights and
slots from appropriate authorities. in addition, Air Canada
will seek to use dormant authorities for routes including
Vancouver-Shanghai, Vancouver-Mexico City and Montreal-Milan
as well as expand service on routes such as Montreal-Rome.

. Smilie from Brian O'Hare Retired AC YYZ...living in Arizona
Maximum runway length?
This (reportedly) really happened at a nontowered airport in Northern
California.  The pilot of a Cessna 180 on amphibious floats, en route
from Kentucky to Alaska, called for an airport advisory, and the Unicom
operator issued the following:
"Wind calm.  No reported traffic.  Use runway 32 or 14, your choice."
The 180 pilot replied, "Which runway is longer?"
