. Margaret Cantwell sends us details of an experience with the IRA -
The Headlines in the papers in London, Salisbury etc. read
"TWO HELD IN TERROR SWOOP-October 3, 1990".
It was a really terrifying experience that had taken place the day before.
I had taken two elderly relatives from the U.S.A., to England.  They
were in their late 70's and I was no chicken at 63 !
We were visiting in Salisbury and we had previously decided to go to
Stonehenge. We boarded the bus and there were only 3 other people,
one being a very strange looking gentleman in a dress suit and spats!
The driver told us we were to report back to the spot he would leave us
at 5 p.m.  We arrived at Stonehenge on the edge of Salisbury plains and
left the bus to go to the ticket booth.
The unusual looking man followed us. Also nearby was a man dressed as King
Arthur holding his sword. I asked the lady in the booth what was up with
him?  She said he is a  strange one who comes all the time. Off we went
to visit these prehistoric monuments now all fenced due to vandalism.
They were spectacular. We returned to the place for the bus at 5 p.m.
There were two young women dressed in Jeans and T Shirts, a honeymoon
couple a young backpacker and us. We waited and waited. Finally the young
fellow on his honeymoon went to phone about 5:30 when he came back he
said he was told by the bus company the police would not let any busses
through.  I said that was a likely story and went over to the taxi driver.
I asked him if he could  take us to Salisbury, but he said "no he was
waiting for someone else. When it came to 6 p.m. and it was really cold
by then, I asked the two girls if they would share a taxi with us, they
said "no" they would wait for the bus. So we continued to wait, by 6:30
the bridegroom was really very upset and went to the car park below to
see if he could get a ride for himself and wife. While he did that I
again      approached the taxi and I asked him if he was having trouble with
his radio    at which point he yelled at me to get down on the ground and as
he said
that a car whizzed past nearly taking my jacket.  Police appeared from
everywhere and two men jumped out of the car and were taken by the police
at gun point. A third followed then the two girls in jeans yelled at us
to run in squat position (ever tried that ?) along a path that followed
a stone wall.  When we came to a break in the wall we were told to get
over it and run, My cousin Norman went down on his backside, Marjorie fell
and had to be picked up and carried over  and I went head first and still
bear the scar of a nasty cut on my arm. We were told by the young ladies
to keep our heads down.  I was very frightened and put my head up to see
what was going on, she pushed it down and I looked up and said "who the
hell are you? ".  At this point she showed her badge.."Under cover police".
I asked one police man as I stood behind this giant monument if we were
really in danger.  He said 'let me put it this way Madam "we have just
cornered the 4 most wanted men in Britain to-day in the IRA"
Cheers...Margaret  "Margaret Cantwell" <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
(Suffice to say, Margaret survived this bit of excitement - eds)

. Smilie.
BREAKOUT BABES BUSTED:
Someone's been watching too much late-night TV.
Charles Bronson made a movie several years ago about using a helicopter
to spring someone from a Mexican prison.  Last week, two women in
Florida tried it for real, commandeering a chartered chopper.  Instead,
the two apparently had second thoughts and ordered the pilot to return
for a landing.  Cops nabbed the women a few miles away.  Now, they may
get to see the object of their abduction more often.
