Subject: Capt. Malcolm (Mac) A. MacKinnon's passing
Retired Air Canada Capt. Malcolm A. MacKinnon, ex RCAF F/L,
(Black Mac 421) died of complications due to cancer on
Dec. 27th, 1999 at 9:15 pm. He died in Olds, Alberta, where he grew up.
He is survived by his Wife Agnes and their five children Allan, Leanne,
Robert, Grant, John.
There will be a memorial service at St. Paul's United Church on January
7th, 2000 at 2:00pm. St. Paul's is located on Main St. in Milton,
Ontario. The family requests a donation to the Cancer Society in lieu of
flowers.
The late Capt McKinnon was a member of 'the NetLetter' mailing list.

. News from the Districts.
The Burloak group held their Christmas lunch/meeting on Dec. 15, 1999
at the home of Raymonde Masse in Oakville. Forty-three attended and a
wonderful time was had by all.
A reminder that our first meeting of the year 2000 will take place on
Jan. 19th at Tucker's Marketplace in Burlington
(south service road & Guelph Line) starting at 10:30 a.m.

. Here is the sked for May's annual convention of the Canadian Aviation
Historical Society (CAHS).
It takes place at the Airport Sheraton in Calgary.

Wednesday May 24

Thursday, May 25

Optional bus tour to the Nanton Lancaster Museum 09:00-19:00
This will include a stop at the Indus Airport for an airmail re-enactment
and a look at the site of the RCAF's High River air station. The tour will
include a tour of the much-praised Nanton museum, then a BBQ supper
and a return to Calgary in the early evening.
Evening is on your own to see friends

Here is a list of speakers confirmed as of late December:
COLIN CALDWELL, son of C.S. "Jack" Caldwell, who flew in the Royal
Flying Corps during the First World War, then turned postwar to
bush-flying, taking part in the first aerial mineral exploration
of northern B.C. and the Yukon (in 1926). This presentation includes a
narrated video made from film shot in 1926 by Jack Caldwell.
R.S. "BOB" PETITE, who will speak on the history of the Canadian
helicopter industry from its prewar beginnings to the 1960s. Bob has 35
years in forestry-related work in Nova Scotia and Alberta, and now works
as an aerial attack officer, flying "bird dog" aircraft. and co-ordinating
air tanker operations.
CLARENCE SIMONSEN on "aviation nose art" carried on the military
aircraft flown by Canadians.
DENNY MAY on his father, legendary Canadian airman "Wop" May,
whose adventures included the First World War, barnstorming,
emergencies, BCATP and para-rescue. "Wop May -- the man nobody
knew" is the topic of this presentation.
COL. DON MATTHEW on "No chickens; no turkeys", the Canadian
Armed Forces in the '90s". He commanded 439 Tactical Fighter Squadron
in the Persian Gulf in 1990-91, then later became commander of the
Composite Aviation Unit with the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti.
DAVE MAPPLEBECK on "the Calgary Flying Club --- 75 years of pilot
training".

evening tour of the Calgary Air & Space Museum.

ST HUBERT INCIDENT
A PRETTY LANDING IS LIKE A MELODY: What with all the recent accidents
involving botched landings, it's nice to hear about a tough touchdown
executed with flair (no pun intended) and professionalism. An AVweb
reader and CFI at St. Hubert airport in suburban Montreal, Quebec, says
he was with a student on a taxiway when an Air Montreal Metro II with a
frozen nose gear landed safely and gently on a 4,840-by-150-foot runway
that had been closed because of snow. A tip of the AVweb hat to the
unidentified flight crew.
