"O'TOOLE, Hubert Francis "Bob" - 75, of Prospect Bay, Halifax , passed
away peacefully January 25, 2000 at home. Born and raised in Halifax, he
joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943. Bob worked in various
capacities with Air Canada in Toronto for thirty five years and resided
in Richmond Hill, Ont. He retired in 1985 to Prospect Bay.He is survived
by Margaret Mary (Peggy) . Funeral service was on Sat Jan 29. Interment
will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to
the Liver Foundation.

Subject: Dance floor
Hi guys and gals:
So, Coleman Andrews of SAA thinks he has a world first by installing a
dance floor on his aircraft?
Ain't nuthin' new under the sun. Air Canada had dance floors thirty
years ago. When the first three 747s were new, the upstairs was used as
a cocktail lounge for first class passengers. We installed a dance
floor, well, sort of. For safety reasons, it ended up being a slab of
marble. Very heavy but not very big. I remember the guys in Maintenance
joking at the time that if the aircraft came to a sudden stop it would
shoot forward and slice the captain in two.
First class passengers back then were mainly grey-beards travelling on
business. Who, exactly, were they supposed to be dancing with? Don't
answer that! It wasn't long before the dance floors were ripped out.

GOOD FLIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT, AND PLEASE BE QUIET: AVweb told you last
summer that Virgin Atlantic will offer private cabins with double beds
later this year, and now other airlines are, um, embracing the concept.
British Airways next month will introduce single beds in business class,
and American Airlines says that by spring 2001, it will have seats that
convert to beds in first class on all transoceanic flights. We can only
hope that pax really just want to get some shut-eye, and will spare
fellow travelers from witnessing their determination to join the mile-
high club.

NEWS FROM THE PIONAIRS:
Sheila Moscoe attended the annual Pionairs' Christmas Luncheon on
Sunday, December 12, 1999 at the Bristol Place Hotel and gives us this
report … There were approximately 158 in attendance. The reception
stated at 1100 where everyone mixed and mingled while being entertained
by a singer/pianist. The luncheon was held in the adjacent room. Saville
Hambleton was the guest speaker and everyone in attendance was pleased
to meet him. The luncheon and Dreams Take Flight draws were well
handled. Fraser O'Shaughnessy and his committee did an excellent job.
T2CK … Sheila Moscoe wanted to let everyone know that we had a fantastic
turnout at our last T2CK (Terminal 2 Coffee Klatch) of the century! It
was so good to see everyone again.

Labour update. Air Canada is pleased to confirm that Flight Dispatchers
represented by the Canadian Air Lines Dispatchers Association (CALDA) at
Canadian Airlines recently ratified their six-year labour agreement. As
well, Canadian Regional Airline pilots represented by the Air Line
Pilots Association (ALPA) have tentatively agreed to a long-term
agreement, subject to ratification.

U.S.A. Industry News: FAA requires improved performance from airport
security screening companies. According to Aviation Daily, companies
hired by airlines to perform security screening duties at airports will
need certification. The FAA will establish uniform performance
standards, strengthen training and testing standards for screeners, and
impose more stringent experience and training requirements for security
company managers and instructors. With these new rules, the FAA hopes to
regulate screening for detecting dangerous objects and prevent them from
being brought on board. Screening companies and airlines will be
accountable for screener performance and training.

More Industry News: Swissair introduces a handy way to check in_a mobile
phone! As reported in Aviation Daily, Swissair is now the first airline
to offer wireless check-in to customers departing the carrier's Zurich
hub. Frequent flyers will be the first to use the system. Using the
phone's screen, customers receive all boarding pass information, plus up-
to-date departure data, gate, and seat number.

Canadian Aviation Historical Society.
The 2nd meeting of the new Vancouver Island Chapter of the CAHS. will be
held on Tuesday February 8th at the Victoria Flying Club Facilities at
2PM. At YYJ airport. The meeting will be an organizational one , to
elect a vice president and a Treasurer and to discuss future meeting
places etc and information about the CAHS Convention in Calgary later on
in May. I hopefully will be asking for a Affiliation Fee of $10.00 from
any interested future attendee and will need at least 10 members of the
CAHS before we will be officially recognized by Headquarters as a Bone
Fide Chapter. I will have a couple of Videos to show relating to

And a reply re Miami Hotel:
A NetLetter reader says: we stayed in Miami before a cruise at the end
of December. All the hotels on the beach were around $150 US or more. We
ended up staying at the TraveLodge Hotel Civic Center. They gave us a
really good rate of $49 per room.. It's in the middle of a busy highway
area with hospitals around it. I wouldn't walk around the area at night,
but it is OK for the daytime. It has a supermarket across the street and
is near the "MetroRail" station. It has free transportation to/from the
Airport, to/from the Cruise Terminal and to/from Bayshore Marketplace (a
tourist area).

Jake the inventor is struggling through the air terminal with two huge
and obviously heavy suitcases when a stranger walks up to him and ask
"Have you got the time?" Jake sighs, puts down the suitcases and glances
at his wrist. "Its a quarter to six" he says. Hay, that's a pretty fancy
watch" exclaims the stranger. Jake brightens a little. "Yeah, it's not
bad. I've been working on it for months - Check this out" - and he shows
him the time zone display, not just for every time zone in the world,
but for the 86 largest cities in the world. He hits a few buttons and
from somewhere on the watch a voice says "the time is eleven till six"
in a Cape Cod accent. A few more buttons and the same voice says
something in Spanish then Japanese. Jake continues "I've also put in
regional accents for each city". The display is unbelievably high
quality and the voice is simply astounding.
The stranger is struck dumb with admiration. "That's not all" says Jake.
He pushes a few more buttons and a tiny but very high-resolution map of
New York City appears on the display. " The flashing dot shows our
location by satellite positioning" explains Jake. "View recede ten",
Jake says, and the display changes to show eastern New York State. "I
want to buy this watch" Says the stranger.
"Oh, no, its not ready for sale yet; I'm still working out the bugs."
"But look at this", and he proceeds to demonstrate that the watch is
also a very creditable little FM radio receiver with a digital tuner, a
sonar device that can measure distances up to 125 meters, a pager with
thermal paper printout, and most impressive of all, the capacity for
voice recording of up to 300 standard-sized books. "though I only have
32 of my most favorites in there so far" says Jake.
"I've got to have that watch" says the stranger. "No, you don't
understand; its not ready" "I'll give you $1,000 for it". "Oh, no, I've
already spent more that than--" "I'll give you $5,000 for it!" "But its
just not-" "I'll give you $15,000 for it!" And the stranger pulls out a
checkbook. Jake stops to think. He's only put about $8,500 into
materials and development, and with $15,000 he can make another one and
have it ready for merchandising in only six months. The stranger
frantically finishes writing the check and waves it in front of him.
"Here it is, ready to hand to you right here and now. $15,000. Take it
or leave it." Jake abruptly makes his decision. "OK", he says, and peels
off the watch. They make the exchange and the stranger starts happily
away.
"Hay, wait a minute", calls Jake to the stranger, who turns around
warily. Jakes points to the two suitcases he'd been trying to wrestle
through the terminal.
"Don't forget your hard drive and batteries".
