. Iain Wyder sends us these thoughts
Capt Bill Spratt, a very active Pionair, passed away recently.
I first met Bill just after he converted to the Viscount from the North Star. We were flying YVR to YYC, flight TC 058.  Before take off he asked me if I wanted to fly the leg.  Needless to say I was delighted.  He had never flown with me before, he was brand new on the equipment but he was showing that characteristic confidence that so many of his generation had in us younger guys.

After we reach the top of climb and we had settled back into cruise he pointed out that the needles
on the oil pressure gauges were flickering considerably.  I looked down and sure enough they
were.

- just like they always did.

What ever the phrase was then I said " no big deal - there is very little oil capacity or usage in a Dart engine ( this was his first jet engine experience)  "Also those gauges are five and dime store issue, they always flicker" I said.

Over the next hour or so we watched the gauges carefully - or he did.  By the time we began our descent into YYC   the spot on the dials where oscillation of the needles was averaging out had dropped significantly.

After we arrived at the gate Bill called maintenance and insisted the problem was looked at.  The filters were dropped and sure enough there was an indication of some foreign matter, seal or
metal, I cannot remember but it was enough to put the airplane out of service.

I learned a lot that day from Bill Spratt about flying, life and close attention to detail.

He was one giant of a man in my estimation.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by brian Dunn -
.a Boeing 767-333 departed Montreal at 1000hrs May 12th on a VIP charter for the Quebec government.  The aircraft is flying non-stop to Buenos Aires Argentina, then on to Santiago Chile on May 16th, then back to Montreal on May 20th.  It is believed that this is the first time an Air Canada aircraft has visited either South American airport.

British Airways Concorde flights will be operating to/from Toronto on the following dates this summer;
Manchester to YYZ on  July 5, August 16 and September 7th.
London to YYZ  on September 22nd.
YYZ to London  on July 6, August 17, September 8th and 22nd.
This is just a partial schedule so if anyone else can fill in the missing bits and
pieces   we would like to hear from you so that we can make the above
complete.  Any information to Brian at

. Found on the internet.
The first of seven British Airways-owned Boeing 767s painted in Qantas colours
was rolled out of a BA paint bay recently.
The distinctive Australian kangaroo will be emblazoned on a further six 767s,
which will be used on Qantas services between Singapore and Perth.
The smaller aircraft have been leased to Qantas as part of BA's new fleet strategy
to use smaller aircraft for shorthaul services.
BA owns a 25% stake in Qantas.

BRITISH AIRWAYS, AIR CANADA TO THE MAT: The rhetoric is getting pretty
intense between Air Canada and British Airways over a pricing dispute,
and it doesn't sound like it would take much to drive both sides to fist
city.  Air Canada boss Robert Milton is calling BA allegations -- that
his takeover of Canadian is unfair competition -- "absurd."  In a side
note, financial officers at Milton's Air Canada say if not for rising
fuel costs, the airline would have made an operating profit of C$75
million in the first quarter, the largest profit ever.  Instead, the
airline lost C$5 million.

OLYMPIC FLAME TO TRAVEL BY AIR: It might not sound like a great idea to
have an open flame burning in an aircraft, but Olympics organizers in
Sydney, Australia, aren't predicting any problems.  Last week,
Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority gave their permission for
Sydney 2000 organizers to fly the flame from Greece to Oz in a specially
designed cradle that has been fitted to airline seats.  (No word on
whether these are commercial flights, but wouldn't it be just your luck?
Air rage guy on one side, open flame on the other.)  The flame will
arrive in Australia June 8; the Olympics begin September 15.

Sheila Moscoe  is due to go on an Alaska cruise and was into finding an hotel in
Vancouver, and this was the result -

Well, my ear is just falling off.  I've been on the phone for hours trying to get a room.
And, here's what I ended up with.    I used your list, plus the e-net, etc.  And one of the
hotel fellows from Howard Johnson downtown suggested I call Tourism BC, which is
hellobc.com.
Anyhow, they booked us a room for $89 per room, incl 2 full breakfasts..at the
Quality Hotel - Inn on False Creek on Howe Street.  And the parking charge is only
$6.00 for overnight on Howe Street.  I hope I made the right decision.
I got a van from Alamo for $54.68 incl all charges e.g. airport concession fee, and
taxes, etc.  So, I thought that was pretty cheap. And no drop off charge for downtown
location, and they have a shuttle (free) from downtown to the Ballantyne pier.
That's it for now,  Sheila <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

. Smilies.

While flying from SLC to SMO recently this exchange was overheard:
Center: "United XXX please say winds aloft."
UAL XXX: "260 at 105 knots."
Center: "Okay, I just wanted to make certain that you had head winds and
did not have an engine shut down."

A couple found by your co-pilot.
