. Need to know.
Integration Update - May 25, 2000

Integrated employee travel policy

Industry Travel teams at Air Canada and Canadian Airlines are tackling
employee travel issues. We’re dealing with a number of major challenges
including different employee travel rules, programs, and different processes
and systems supporting them. We’re working toward an integrated policy once
RESIII and a joint service charge system are in place. Here’s a synopsis of
what’s coming up:

Effective June 12, boarding priority for all active and retired employees
will be based on service date rather than time of check-in or date of
registration.

Air Canada and its Regional Carrier employees will travel on Canadian
Airlines with an S4J6 boarding priority—the same as Canadian Airlines’
retirees with 25 years or less of service.
Canadian Airlines and Canadian Regional Airlines’ employees will travel on
Air Canada and its Regional Carriers with a C4/Y10 boarding priority—the
same as Air Canada’s Regional Carrier employees.

For the peak summer period:

The Family Affair program remains unchanged—it’s valid on Air Canada or
Regional Carrier operated flights only.
Air Canada’s travel partner and Canadian Airlines’ guest travel programs
can’t be extended on the other carrier.

Looking forward to fall
The summer schedule has, in some cases, changed the carrier serving a
particular destination. We recognise that active and retired employees from
both carriers are finding standby travel more difficult—unfortunately, there
are no simple solutions for this situation. Once systems are in place, the
integrated employee travel policy will include the following:

Simplified RESIII boarding priorities
Common service charge structure
Integrated employee travel policies and travel documents (trip passes)
Canadian Airlines’ participation in Air Canada/other airline and Star
Alliance™ network interline agreements.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -

On May 18th a DC-8-73 (N803DH) operated by DHL Airways departed from San Juan and about 0417hrs local time experienced uncommanded shutdown of the Nos 3 and 4 engines 170 nautical miles northwest of San Juan.  The captain stated that while in cruise at FL390 with climb thrust set to approximately 95 percent N1, the ignition override was turned off and within 2 mins, the No 3 engine experienced uncommanded shutdown.  He executed the "phase one" items, re-engaged the ignition override to "all engines" and while descending to FL350 the No 4 engine experienced an uncommanded shutdown.  The flightcrew performed the second engine failure checklist, declared an emergency and received vectors to return to San Juan.  The flight descended to FL220 where the No 4 engine restarted followed by the No 3 engine.  The aircraf then landed uneventfully in San Juan.   The NTSB has retained the flight data recorder to investigate.

. More on airport codes -
Jack Desmarais sends us this information.
Bernice Laing is partially correct. Airports were first identified by three-letter codes.
These are still in use by airlines all over the world for baggage tags. The move to four
letters was not dictated by flight safety but by the limitation imposed by three-letter
codes; there are not enough to cover the world's airports.
ICAO devised a four-letter system totally different from the existing codes except for the
USA, where the letter K was added in front, and Canada where C was added.
That's why you still see airlines using LHR (London Heathrow) while ICAO adopted
EGLL, E being for Europe and G for Great Britain. All London area airports sport L as
the third letter and the fourth letter gets it down to the individual airport. Similarly,
EDFF identifies Frankfurt, Germany, the second letter, D, being for Deutschland.
But airlines still use FRA for ticketing.
The weirdest three-letter codes in the world are in Canada. In Canada, you say? Yes.
While Nassau is NAS, Toronto is YYZ. Canada's three-letter codes all started with Y
but what followed is difficult to figure. Why not YTO for Toronto?
Some, like YBC for Baie Comeau, QC make sense most don't.
If the guy who first dreamt up Canadian airport codes is still alive could he elucidate his
phantasmagoria in developing the identifiers for Canadian airports? Like, why YQQ for
Comox, BC, YYY for Mont Joli, QC, etc.

. CF-TCC update from Alan MacLeod -

Subject: CF-TCC UPDATE, SUNDAY May 28, Muskoka
The Lockheed attended the Muskoka airship on Sat. and Sunday.
The aircraft flew three local trips, on both days, in support of DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT.
The Toronto Dreams committee were on hand to organize the flights. Flights were almost
sold out. Only six seats were empty over the two days.
Maintenance coverage was provided by Geoff McCrae, CAT/AME from Winnipeg
who came and volunteered his time.
Capt. Ted Dodds and Capt Ken Patry "did the driving", while in Muskoka. All three then
ferried the aircraft to Dorval.
It is tucked away here now in the narrow body hangar.
DREAMS flying will take place here in Montreal on June 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Elton Townsand, local operator in Muskoka donated his hangar for the two
nights. ESSO donated fuel. A thanks to all of those folks who help make it possible.
While in Muskoka, retired Capt. Ron Dennis, former Director Flt. Ops.
Toronto and Capt.George Mackay, retired B747 Supervisor were spotted
admiring the aircraft.
Following the flying from Montreal, the Lockheed will proceed to Ottawa,
weekend of June 16, 17 and 18th. Flying will be from the National Aviation Museum
at Rockliffe Airport.

Bill Rowe has sent us this information -
Subject: Airport Hotels
I thought I'd let you know how I made out at the Heathrow Lodge. It's good, clean quite basic accommodation, with TV.........bathroom tiny but clean. Hotel near airport but very quiet inside....didn't hear much noise from airport. Price still 40 pounds a night airline rate (regular 55 pounds), cold breakfast extra 2.50 pounds, credit card charge 2 pounds....so pay cash ! Excellent breakfast less than 10 mins walk at MacDonald's down the same road....Old Bath Rd. Very good dinner and prices at the Whitehorse Pub about 3-4 mins. walk down the same road......don't go to pub across the street...noisy, smokey, bad greasy smells.

Very prompt Airport pick up by calling hotel......quite satisfactory for a fast overnight stay.....the Heathrow Park Hotel further down the street ( near MacDonald's) charges 125 pounds, no airline discount, no free pick up !  Best rooms are 104 and 111 on the main floor. If time is on your hands you can take a quick bus from right outside to Slough or Hounslow or pick up the tube at Hounslow West and head for downtown London.....or go back to the airport and pick up the London Heathrow Express....15 mins to Paddington !
