. News from the districts.
"London and District" Pionairs launch a new season with "Christmas in
June".
On June 14th the "London and District" Pionairs launched their new season
with a celebration of Christmas in June featuring a complete Christmas
dinner cooked and served by newly elected Director Rev. Lee Donahue and his
Pionair wife Lillian.
The hot buffet consisted of garnished melon wedges, roast turkey with
dressing, baked ham, creamed onions, spring peas, sweet potatoes, cashew
casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, home made bread,
followed by strawberry shortcake with tea and coffee.
To complete the theme there followed a fun draw with gift wrapped presents
for everyone.
"London and District" Pionairs are scattered over a wide area and it was a
pleasure to welcome members from Tillsonburg, Stratford, Lyndhurst,
Strathroy, Grand Bend, and for the first time, far away Kincardine.
Director Rev. Lee outlined his objectives and expectations to increase the
participation in Pionair activities especially in outlying areas, to involve
all members in an active program and to provide assistance in whatever form
required to Pionairs in need.

. Pickings from the YYZNEWS newsletter issued by Brian Dunn -
Canadian Regional Airlines was officially put up for sale as of June 30th.
There is a limited 60-day period for any potential buyers to come
forward to put in an
offer for CRA. If no agreement to sell is reached within 60 days Air
Canada intends to
amalgamate CRA into the new Air Canada Regional airline.
The new airline called Roots Air, will lease in its own equipment,
A320s and at least one
330 aircraft and these will be painted up in the Roots Air colour scheme
and 3-class interior.
Roots Air will be operated as a separate division of Skyservice Inc. and
the charter carrier
will continue to use its own A330 and A320s in a high-density charter
role this winter and
for the forseeable future. Roots Air will become one more division of
Skyservice Inc. and
will operate under the Skyservice certificate, but aircraft will not be
shared between the
two airlines.
Air Canada will take over Canadian Airline's sponsorship as official
airline of the Calgary
Flames, effective July 14, 2000. A new five-year agreement has been
signed.
Embraer Aircraft made its first flight of the new 44-passenger ERJ140 on
June 27th
from its Sao Paulo factory.
WestJet Airlines has purchased an ex-Southwest 737-200 (msn 21811) from
First Union
Commercial. The transaction was arranged by Meridian Aerospace.
Air Canada sold two Canadian Airlines 767-300ERs (FIN634 C-FCAG and FIN 639
C-FXCA) to GECAS and leased back for 18 years. Both have CF6 engines.
Southwest Airlines has placed a firm order for 94 additional 737-700
jetliners from
The Boeing Co. with an option for another 196 jets over the next 12
years. The first
deliveries will begin in 2002. Since its inception Southwest Airlines
has stuck to using
Boeing 737s exclusively and is credited with keeping the carrier's cost
levels down due to
commanality.
Korean Air placed an order with Airbus Industrie for the purchase of
three more
widebody A330-300 aircraft. This increases the carriers total to 19
A330s. The newly
ordered aircraft will be delivered in 2001 and 2002.

. Remember when?
The Lockheed Electra L10 was flown for the first time 23rd February
1934 and its
performance could only be called superior. It cruises at 190 mph with a
top speed of
200 and was the first multi-engined aircraft to do it. Canadian Airways
Ltd was the
first Canadian customer, and in 1936 they bought 2 copies for the
YVR-SEA route
and were registered CF-AZY and CF-BAF. Canadian Airways Ltd were
planning on a
transcontinental route, but in 1937 the politician C.D.Howe decided that
a government
owned airline should be formed. He set up Trans-Canada Air Lines, who
took over the
2 Electras and the route from Canadian Airways Ltd. T.C.A. bought 3 more
copies of
the L10 and registered them as CF-TCA, CF-TCB and CF-TCC. When the model L14
Super Electra was produced in 1938, T.C.A. equipped their whole fleet
with them,
and bought the L18 model Lodestar too. Until 1943, T.C.A. was an
all-Lockheed
airline.
Today, CF-TCA is a resident at the National Aeronautical Museum in
Ottawa, The
whereabouts of CF-TCB is unknown and CF-TCC has been restored and is
performing
stellar service for the Drams Takes Flight operation. For information on

People are getting tired!
A tearful goodbye letter to Robert Milton and Air Canada
Dear Bob,
I'll get right to the point. It's over.
I realize that you are really busy and have a lot on your mind, but I had to
come out and say it. I owe it to you. The way you've been acting lately, I'm
afraid it might come as a shock. We've had a long relationship, but it's
time to part ways. I thought this letter would help you understand.
I remember my first flight. What was I, five or six? My dad made a big deal
about it and all. My brother and I. My sister and mom had flown the day
before, because my parents didn't want us all to die together. They used to
do those things. I remember the humid sweet air when I landed in Tampa. It
was a Super-Constellation, Trans-Canada Air Lines. I was in love.
You changed your name to Air Canada. I didn't care. I remember meeting the
guy who designed the new logo, a maple leaf in a circle. I was proud.
The affair was torrid. I must admit that I had tried other airlines.
American, British Airways, even the silky smooth attempt by Max Ward to lure
me away with day flights to London, with roses and Hennesey XO. I was still
in love with you. I couldn't help it.
Then you rewarded me beyond my dreams -- Aeroplan. No longer could I hold
back. My life was planned around you. I used to book business class air
fares and pay the upgrade. I couldn't afford it, but I secretly loved the
attention. I knew friends who found their future spouses on planes, but not
me -- I was in love with you.
Elite: I had made it. I could stand in a new line, drink free booze at the
airport. I would go early, skipping work to enjoy your pleasures. Friends
were jealous. You upgraded me willy nilly to show your love for me. Those
were the best of times. But then something new crept in; Super Elite.
I figured it couldn't get any better, I had something to go for, and then it
started falling apart. Rate hikes, coupons I could never use, full planes
where I couldn't stretch out. I figured it was a short-term thing, and then
it struck: Onex.
I was crestfallen. What could be worse? I saw him on the cover of Maclean's,
all cozy in his library, in his sweater. But Bob, you and I knew the truth.
I was so happy to see you win.
Last week, I realized what really happened. I saw the flight attendant I
once drunkenly called the best-looking woman on the planet again. She
remembers me from four years ago. She doesn't like you much either anymore.
She's tired. She can't keep people happy. She said she gives them the
"take-the-train" look.
So now I'm sitting on my fourth flight this week, and the feeling's gone,
just like my electronic ticket I confirmed with you last night and you lost.
Just like the flight with my business partner who isn't a frequent flier and
had to line up to miss it. Just like the flight you cancelled to Quebec and
then reinstated 10 minutes later after some passengers flipped out.
Come Friday, Bob, I'm going home for the weekend. I'm back at it on Tuesday,
back to California, but this time with someone else. Someone more reliable,
more trustworthy. You know what I'll miss? The nice brocade seats with the
blue-and-green maple leafs. Could I get some material for a couch or
something? It'll remind me of the great times I had with you.
Last week you said everything's all right, and you'd improved. That was the
last straw. Now I know for sure that you must be sniffing jet fuel. It's
okay. I know you'll get some help. My Elite luggage tag is enclosed. I don't
want anyone to know. I can walk. Okay?

HOTEL WORKERS COULD STRIKE IN VANCOUVER
Tourists heading to British Columbia's Lower Mainland would do well
to double-check
their hotel reservations as unionized workers at seven major hotels in
Vancouver may
go out on strike, in fact the Delta Hotel has already been struck, the
rest are soon to follow!
NEW DESTINATIONS LAUNCH THIS WEEKEND
Starting Jul 2nd, CDN returned to Sydney, Australia, using their own
metal, after a hiatus
of nine years. The new service will be on their newly delivered B767
aircraft with a routing of
Toronto-Honolulu-Sydney. Passengers from Vancouver will connect to the
new service
in HNL for onward travel to SYD.
On Monday, AC launched its new Toronto-Amsterdam route with daily,
non-stop B767
service.
THREE NEW B767S ENTER CDN SERVICE
Three new 767s will come into service during the month of July. Tail #649
will be configured
with 25 J class seats and 180 Y class and began flying July 2. Tails #653
and #654 will
enter service with 36 J and 184 Y class seats, and will begin flying July
3 and July 31,
respectively.
Visiting Singapore are we?
Roughly 40% of passengers are in transit, and Changi offers them
several diversions
beyond the normal duty-free shops. Two airside hotels rent rooms for
six-hour blocks
from as little as S$40 (us$23.50). Each room has a bed, TV and shower.
The hotels
have gyms, a pool, and a full-service spa. If you have a particularly
long layover,
Changi has a tour-hour guided tour of Singapore - absolutely free.
BUT, beware, there are strict rules which the police enforce. They will
fine you one
the spot for jay-walking, for spitting on the sidewalk, for bringing
chewing gum into
the country and for taking fast food onto the public transit system. As
for drugs - well
don't expect to return home soon - if ever!
