*** Unfriendly skies - Passengers casualties of a labor war
The Las Vegas-to-Los Angeles leg of Cathy Baille's United Airlines flight to Seattle
was delayed two and a half hours by bad weather. Baille's irritation was somewhat
eased when she and her fellow passengers were informed that their connecting flights
would wait. But when Baille arrived that evening in L.A. the final United flight to Seattle
was long gone. She was stranded. "Sleep in the airport tonight and take an Alaska
Airlines flight tomorrow morning," the United "owner-representative" instructed her.
He pointed to a bench: her bed. When she inquired as to whether the airline would
reimburse her if she found a room herself, the agent just shook his head briskly.
Flying the fractious skies of United, exasperated and enraged travelers are encountering
meltdowns in terminals across the U.S.

Advertising agencies are always seeking open spaces to display ads, and if the space
happens to be in front of a "captive" audience, all the better. If that audience happens to be somewhat upscale, such as air travelers, that's even more of a plus. Kansas City, Mo.-
based Advent Advertising Corp. believes it has a winning ticket with a method to put
advertising on the doors of aircraft overhead bins. It has signed on Vanguard Airlines Inc.,
also of Kansas City, to launch its Advent Airads.

Air Canada appoints ombudsman to handle complaints -
Flying in a zone of service turbulence since the takeover of its rival Canadi<n Airlines,
Air Canada  has appointed an ombudsman to address mounting customer complaints.
But whether the announcement is just a public relation move or a genuine effort to
improve service remains to be seen, according to a leading customers lobby group.
The company has acknowledged that since it started to integrate Canadian Airlines
into its operations last December, customers have been complaining in greater numbers
about service problems such as flight delays and reservation snafus. The acquisition of
Canadi<n Airlines, following a heated takeover battle, also took on a political spin, given
the dominance Air Canada now exercises over Canadian air travel.

A United Airlines jumbo jet carrying 300 passengers made an emergency landing
Saturday at a small airport in Ontario. The 747 aircraft was traveling from Hong Kong to
New York when the pilot alerted the airport in North Bay, about 200 miles north of
Toronto, that the aircraft had an in-flight emergency, police said. The jet landed safely
and no one was hurt.
(North Bay Airport (Jack Garland Airport). Trans-Canada Air Lines made its first
flight Aug 1938, and began passenger service 1939 using Lockheed 10A aircraft - eds)

Airbus gives Boeing a lesson in humility
As the flying maneuvers wind down and the publicity hounds head home, one
resounding echo from this year's Farnborough International air show hangs in the air.
It portends a new reality for the aerospace industry and for Boeing itself: Despite
unveiling $15 billion worth of airplane orders in one week here - more than ever before at
an air show - Seattle's hometown plane maker still came in second - out of two.
Bragging rights instead went to Airbus Industrie, which trumped Boeing by proclaiming
orders worth $18 billion retail.

. Charles MacKie, TCA/AC Amateur Radio Group, sends an update -
Tuesday signals where the same as the week previous, I could not hear the
Maritimes at all and was fortunate to have Chuck VE3AZA to relay the information.
VE1CAJ reports a nice day and Don has been quite consistent in his checks in
recently and we all appreciate his participation.
VE1BZL John also has been consistent and again he reports everything Routine
with him.
VE3EY Bob Wright says it was a nice day but starting to cloud over.
VA3BEE Ron Reed will be moving to BC actually Creston, so was teasing him
about the Doukhobor girls there. He has now sold his property in Ontario and will be
back on the air from BC as soon as he can get up an antenna.
VE5CA Ken Clarkson reports  they have been having Tornados in his area but
fortunately   none too close to him.
VE3AZA Chuck reports large CB in his area so had to watch out for
thunderstorms.  We got into a discussion about Flight Simulators and how he had his
first  experience with a Link Trainer that Capt Rube Hadfield used to own.
That's it for now, so everyone Keep Smiling, Healthy, and in good spirits.

Kapuskasing Airport Ontario is 3 kms west of the town. On Feb 27th 1938,
Trans-Canada Air Lines made its first landing with a Lockheed L10A Electra.
Scheduled services began April 1st 1939 until 1957.

On Sept 9th, 1938, a Trans-Canada Air Lines Lockheed 14 made an emergency

. Not only has the past stories by Charles Mackie been interesting, but it refreshed
Charles' memory, which he sends us -
Subject: Another amusing incident
Hi Terry and Vesta,
I see you have been digging up some of my early stories of the past and I hope
the membership enjoys them.
I just remembered another incident which I don't think I have sent to you before so
here goes,
I had just left Canadian Airways Ltd to be employed by the Dept of Transport to go
to Ottawa to work in their Monitoring station. Being a young fellow of 20 Years old I
was tired of seeing nothing but "Blue Berry Blondes" up in the North country and
wanted to get back to civilization.
Anyway I had my first train ride from Winnipeg to Ottawa and arrived in Ottawa at
0430 in the morning.  So I took myself and my bag of tricks with me to go and see if I
could find the address given to me, but when I got outside everything was covered in
ice. They had a sleet storm during the night and I couldn't stand up on the sidewalk
so went back into the Station to wait until daylight, and had my first experience with
a "Wait on yourself" cafeteria. and finally got up enough courage to get a cup of coffee
and a bowl of porridge.
Later that morning I ventured out again and by this time they had sanded the sidewalks
so I finally ended up at the address on Sparks Street and introduced myself to the
personnel there, and they promptly took me out to work site, and obtained board and
room for me on Pleasant street and thus was all set up go to work and found they did
not have any public transportation to the work site which was at a place called the
"Booth Farm". So I had to buy a set of skiis and skiied back and forth across the
Dominion Experimental Farm to get work and sometimes on the Midnight shift it was
kinda  eerie skiing at night.
After I had been there a while mostly monitoring the German station "DAN" who
was sending continuous streams of coded information which we copied down and sent
them to some place downtown Ottawa for decoding.  However our main reason for
monitoring DAN was that, when he stopped transmissions, the pause was to allow
German submarines to transmit their information. So whenever we heard a Sub we
pushed the Panic button to alert all the DF stations up and down the East coast to
get a bearing on the sub.
We also spent long hours scouring all the High Frequency band for Clandestine
operations by the enemy but personally never discovered any.
(We will continue Charles' story in the next NetLetter - eds)

. Smilies.
Gordon Dalziel contributes these -
Our search-and-rescue helicopter crew was aiding a stricken fishing vessel
off the coast of British Columbia. It had lost steerage and was taking on water.
We hoisted a technician aboard the boat, and he immediately requested a portable
pump. As it was being hoisted, however, it bounced off the boat, broke loose and fell
into the ocean. Then the technician called for a rescue collar to evacuate the crew from
the sinking vessel. It, too, fell into the water and was lost. At that, our aircraft
commander looked back and asked,
"Is there anything else you'd like to throw at them?"
--Capt. Aaron M. Twa

Because the air force shared the Camp Borden, Ont., facilities with the army, which
needed a lot of room for artillery practice as well as for ammunition dumps, we were
warned not to fly over any area marked X on our maps.
After one flying session, an instructor came into the flight-ops room and told us about
the experience he'd just had with his student pilot.
Sitting behind the student in a Chipmunk trainer, he had tapped his helmet and yelled
into the intercom, "Do you know where the blazes you are?"
"Yes, sir," the student replied. "We're right over 15X."
"What are you doing over 15X?" the instructor demanded.
"Ninety knots, sir!"
