. Need to know.
Standby travel from Paris a challenge until early September. Until early September,
we're anticipating high passenger loads from      Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle to Canada.
Standby travel could be a      challenge for employees and their guests-please keep
this in mind when      making travel plans, and consider alternate arrangements.
(We understand that, recently, there were over 90 standby's waiting at LHR - eds)

Harry van Sickle sent us this information -
FYI...any one sending children/grandkids from YVR be advised the airport authority
will no longer allow airlines to give gate passes...so if your passenger is just over the
unaccompanied minor age i.e. 13 yrs and never flown alone before they are on their
own ..you can downgrade them to minor at a cost of ca$60.00..??
I found out the hard way recently.

On August 21, Air Alliance will offer three Beech 1900D departures every business day—the only daily non stop service linking Toronto and Manchester, N.H.

OTTAWA  DISTRICT from Pat Hare -
May I introduce you to your new District Director, and her team for the next
two years?
District Director - Jesse Rougeau                       841-7091
Deputy District Director= Graham Richardson     613-874-2850
Treasurer - Bruce Wanamaker                     521-1838
Membership Co-ordinator - Glee Shapiro              733-5597
Telephone Co-Ordinator- Jack McGuire            819-778-0930
Social Co-Ordinator and
District Networker-Ilene Pedwell                        596-6169
Please call her if you have   news about any of our members.
She  will call or send cards on our behalf.
The same team who helped me, and I'm sure they will do a great job for you in
the future.
AGM- The number attending the AGM was lower than expected, nevertheless
those who did attend found the meetings interesting, and the camaraderie of Air
Canada Pionairs continues to exist.  We hope for a stronger numerical response
next May, when the event is scheduled for Calgary- May 18-20, 2001, Westin
Hotel, downtown.  Costs will be reduced, and your National Executive is making
great plans for the event.
VICE PRESIDENT-PEOPLE- Sue Welschied participated in the meetings and
was our Guest Speaker for the banquet.  She brought with her a timely message
from "ROBERT' our President and Chief Executive Officer.  Together they made us
aware of the tremendous challenge and daunting task facing the Company integrating
the workforces of Air Canada and Canadian Airlines.  It is obvious that many in the
Company are burning the midnight oil and meeting the challenge with great resolve

IN A LIGHTER VEIN - Our next  BIG EVENT will be the JOINT MEETING
WITH OUR FRIENDS FROM MONTREAL-SEPT.20-LUNCH AT UPPER CANADA GOLF  CLUB, MORRISBURG, ON.- plan to join us for lunch-and
take part in  some of the additional attractions for the day, if you are able.
LOCAL NEWS- Jesse Rougeau's tour to Scandinavia can be deemed a success,
with 20 retirees and friends attending.  AC travel to and from Copenhagen, even
with 50% fares was dicey, with all of us waiting as standbys until the very last minute.  Regrettably, not all passholders were able to board. Mentioned as a reminder,
company policy changed some time ago and a 50% fare doesn't guarantee a seat if
there are revenue standbys.  One can't really argue with a policy which puts revenue passengers first, but it is new to most of us.
It also makes one very aware that if revenue retirees are at risk during peak times,
we must be very careful about the flights on which we list.  Travel Partners,
especially if they are travelling without us.  Being unable to get back can be a very costly outcome.

. Found on the internet.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man found in the wheel well of an Air France jet
at Los Angeles International Airport late Thursday may have been a
stowaway who survived an overseas flight, authorities said. "We could
see him secreted in the (main wheel) well," Fire Department spokesman
Jim Wells said. Wells said the man thrashed about as firefighters
pulled him out. He was taken to UCLA Medical Center with severe
hypothermia . It wasn't clear how he could have survived a
high-altitude flight in the wheel well or if he might have been
secreted in a safer part of the plane during flight before climbing
down after landing. The Boeing 747 originated in Papeete.

British Midland has begun what it calls 'pet passport' promotion that allows a
passenger to take cats and/or dogs on board any of eight daily flights from
Amsterdam to Heathrow. Until now the only way to bring a cat or dog into the
U.K. was via ferry routes or train.

*** The passengers applauded
WASHINGTON, D.C. - It is time to go visit Virginia Warren's son at the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial wall. I knock on the door of her hotel suite. She is ready, resplendent
in a white dress. Understandably, she's a bit nervous. She's 85. It has been a long
journey. But now, finally, she will get to touch Galen Warren's name, etched in half-inch
letters on black granite alongside those of 58,209 dead soldiers. For years she dreamed
about this day. Virginia tells me about the flight from Seattle.
Virginia says she cannot believe how nice people have been to her. She tells me how
employees of Southwest Airlines escorted her to the gate and had her board first and
choose any seat. The pilot came by and greeted her. When everyone else was aboard,
they made an announcement about why Virginia was going to Washington.
Hearing the story of her long journey, the passengers applauded.
