. News from the districts.
The Prestwick/Glasgow Pionairs meet for lunch on the 1st > Tuesday of every
month at the St. Nicholas Hotel in Preswick at 12:30.
John Baker, Director of the U.K. Pionairs sends us this update -
None of the retirees at PIK/GLA appear to be on the net.
My wife Ellen and I recently toured the Lake District of England and the
Border Regions of Scotland.  We called into Prestwick and had lunch with some
retired PIK/GLA colleagues.  They meet at 1230 on the 1st Tuesday of each
month at the St. Nicholas Hotel Prestwick.  Old friends at the lunch were,
Gordie Aithison PIK, Jim Sloan PIK, Dorothy Delacy PIK/LHR but retired back
to Scotland, Marion Macdonald PIK, Joyce Paul GLA, June Clelford PIK (widow
of Elton and now living back in PIK), Pat (Fraser) Meiklejohn PIK,
Neil Taylor PIK (now living in Baton Rouge but on a visit).
A regular at the lunches but absent on the day is Jay Caldwell GLA.
Well worth a visit if you are in Scotland is the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Voted the Best New Attraction in the UK 1999 it is moored at Edinburgh (Leith) Docks.
There is a Visitor Centre giving an insight into the history of a unique Royal residence.
Some of the highlights you can see onboard the yacht are, the Bridge, the Admiral's
Cabin & Quarters, the Queen's sitting room, Sun lounge, Dining room, and the
Engine room.  It is a self guided tour using an audio handset, and you would probably
want to allow 2 hours for a visit.  In summer it is very popular you are advised to
pre-book by phone, 0131 555 5566

.  In Netletter nr 61 we mentioned some recollections of
experiences in the Lancastrian aircraft in the early days of
T.C.A. sent by Charles Mackie - here is another one from 1944, which
appeared in NetLetter nr 66 -

We took off at midnight a few minutes before a second Lancastrian
flown by Joe Barclay and Kelly Edmison. We knew that they were in
the area but we never saw one another until we were landing.
The ground speed was over 400 mph and the reporting positions on
the navigators chart were further apart than normal. We knew that
we had a terrific tailwind. The second Lancastrian landed a few
minutes behind us. Although we held the crossing speed record for
a few minutes, their time of 12 hours and 25 minutes stood for
several years until the Constellations broke it.
The outside air temperature was reading minus 62F and that was
the coldest that I had ever experienced. I recall trying to get
some heat out of the duct by the Radio Officer's position and
when I opened it all up all that came out was snow. It meant that
the heat exchangers were not working, so I closed it all up again.

. Remember when?
Canadian Pacific (Steamships and Railways) was created in 1911, and had its
charter altered to allow it to  "... establish, equip, maintain and operate services of
aircraft of all kinds."
Canadian Pacific was involved in the formation of the Aviation Corporation of Canada
in 1929 and, in 1930 with the formation of Canadian Airways. Canadian Airways was
the result of a merger between Western Canada Airways, formed in Dec 1926, and
Aviation Corporation of Canada.
Canadian Airways received its charter Jun 27th 1930 and commenced operations
Nov 25th 1930.
During 1940 and 1941, Canadian Pacific purchased the following -
Canadian Airways Ltd, Arrow Airways Ltd, Dominion Skyways Ltd,
Ginger Cite Airways Ltd, Yukon Southern Air Transport Ltd, Wings Ltd,
Starratt Airways and Transportation Ltd, Quebec Airways Ltd and Prairies Airways Ltd.
gaining ownership to 84 aircraft of 29 types.
Canadian Pacific Air Lines was formed in May 16th 1942 and commenced
operations on July 1st 1942.

. Found on the internet.
Heathrow 'besieged' by Canada geese
Geese can bring down jumbo jets. An alarming increase in the number of Canada
geese around Heathrow Airport is posing a serious threat to air safety, pilots have
been warned. Numbers of the large bird have grown so quickly that they risk bringing
down large aircrafts like jumbo jets. The British Airports Authority (BAA), which owns
Heathrow, last week issued a warning to pilots about the build-up in numbers of geese
around the airport. Aircraft are particularly vulnerable to flocks of the bird which can
cause a catastrophic failure in both engines.
