Subject: Family Affair
I see by the blue book that I received yesterday  [ Employee Travel ] on page 18 under
those eligible for Family Affair, they have omitted "brother in law and sister in law"
I hope this is only a typo error. What this would mean is I can give my brother a reduction
in travel under the family affair but not his wife.

In response, Industry Travel advises -
Yes, it was an omission.  Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law are
definitely eligible persons listed in the Family Affair Validation
form and CIC*85.

. News from the Air Canada Pionair districts.
The Vancouver Island Pionairs Fall luncheon was attended by 44 people who sat
down to a smoked Salmon luncheon.
Out-of-towners included -
Terry Baker and Sheila Snow from Nanaimo.
Karl and Joy Schultz and John McManus from Vancouver.
Bill and Rita Quinn who moved from Kelowna.
Nona Deyman from Seattle.
Wynne Evans from Parry Sound, ON.
Chaired by John Jeffries, Director of the Vancouver Island Pionairs.
Guest speaker was Nicole Williamson, Sales and Marketing Coordinator for
Interlining Plus (formerly Canadian Interline Travel).
Nicole came armed with pamphlets of some interline tours and cruises, and
talked about some of the various services available from Interlining Plus.
The chairman introduced the subject of attendance at the various functions, and
some discussion took place regarding some ideas for increasing attendance. The
Vancouver Island has approximately 450 retirees, of which only 300 are Pionair
members. The telephone committee each spoke on their findings, and the various
reasons given for not attending the various functions. As the Vancouver Island
has the most senior retirees, many do not want to either drive the distance or have
a health problem.
The final guest speaker was Jo Kennedy, President of the C.A.I.R.E. chapter 2
which covers Canadian Airlines retirees for Vancoiuver and the Islands. During
her speak, Jo explained briefly, the make up of the District, and how the various
Presidents form their national board.
From the 268 retirees in the district, some 168 belong to C.A.I.R.E
Luncheon meetings are held bi-monthly, at different locations, on the fourth Thursday
of each month, with an average attendance in the 90's.
The various locations have been Travelodge in Victoria, Silver Bridge Restaurant in
Duncan, Coast Western in Courtenay and the next one will be in Nanaimo at the
Cottonwood Golf Club at Nanaimo Airport.
C.A.I.R.E. also operate a volunteer 'help line' for which car pools are formed,
and stay-ins are helped.

Sydney employees in the Olympic spirit. The past two weeks have been very exciting for Canadian Airlines employees in Sydney, Australia. The Olympics brought
an influx of tourists, athletes, and media, turning Sydney into a party town of Olympic proportions. As the Olympics come to a close this weekend, Canadian Airlines will carry capacity loads, with October 2-4 shaping up to be some of the busiest departure days, as athletes and supporters head home. The October 2 flight is dedicated to departing CBC personnel

. Found on the internet -
Virgin Airlines has claimed another world first by allowing passengers to receive
calls via their mobile phones whilst in flight.
If the call comes while a passenger is watching an inflight movie, it will ring through
the headset, and a message will come up on the individuals screen saying
"Earth calling". Developed by BT, the new service is exclusive to Virgin Airlines.

An on-line check-in service was launched by British Airways during the summer. The
hi-tech service is open to corporate travellers working for companies linked to the
airlines extranet. Staff from those companies can check in from home or office 24
hours prior to departure. Seats are selected from a cabin plan featured on the site.
If successful, the trial will extend to its top 200 corporate customers next March 2001.
BA claims it is the first airline to offer such a service for international passengers.

Airline staff at Heathrow airport are able to purchase goods at the duty free shops
located on airside.  Purchases can only be made during lunch time or normal work
breaks, and goods collected the next day. The employee can only make purchases
during a scheduled work day, upon presentation of their identity badge.

. Terry's travel tips.
Chuck Shnider was in the UK during the spring on a house exchange arrangement  and sent us this web site for those interested in this idea. http://www.ca.homelink.org/
Whilst on this trip, Chuck contacted various local travel agents and got a good deal
for a 'sell-off' on a bus tour with the Seerings Tours, and recommends this.
Some of the 'sell-offs' offer between 40% and 50% off normal pricing.

. Smilie.
Some local flying club students were visiting the tower for the first time and being
shown all the equipment, radar screens, radios, etc., by the two controllers on duty.
One of the students asked, "Have you ever had a real live emergency?"
The controllers thought for a minute and then one replied, "Well yeah, we did run out
of coffee once...."

Here's one from  Gordon Dalziel" <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
In the " DUH  Catagory "
I was at the airport, checking in at the gate,  when the airport employee asked,
"Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge ??"
I said, "If it was without my knowledge, how  would I know ??"
He smiled and nodded knowingly,  "That's why we ask."
