. Need to know.
Brian Dunn editor of the YYZNEWS advises that Air Canada will be
dis-continuing their Toronto-Austin TX route due to poor load   factor.
This was one of the two new routes started earlier this year that have not
survived.   The other was Toronto - Ontario CA.
From: Ina Wallace <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
Subject: New Passes
To-day we went to Victoria Airport to pick up a couple of new passes (old ones
cannot be used anymore) and were advised that they had none and didn't think they
would be getting any in the next two days.  We are planning to fly to Florida on Wed.,
needless to say we were not amused!  We phoned Winnipeg and told them of our
problem and they are going to issue us a ticket (same charges as the pass but we will
pay for it there instead of payroll deduction) to be picked up at the airport - that's our
problem solved but what about every one else?
As we were talking to YWG we found out that our listing that we had done by
voice mail had not been recorded as we had expected.
We listed on the CP non-stop flight , YYJ-YYZ and then AC YYZ-MIA, Ac MIA-YYZ,
Ac YYZ-YVR and then did a separate listing for our YVR-YYJ.
What we heard on the speech recognition system was that you needed a separate
listing for Canadian Regional, AC regional and all other regional but did not hear Canadian
mentioned.
After listing the first leg (YYJ-YVR) on Canadian I continued on listing the Ac flights as
mentioned above.
We were surprised to find that we were not listed for the AC flights when we talked to
Winnipeg to-day.
I have now found out that the CP and AirBc should have been listed on one PNR and all
AC on another.
We thought you might find this of some interest to others and what can we
do to get some passes at Victoria Airport?
We have so many commuters (AC staff) to Vancouver that there is no stock for
anyone else!      Weldon & Ina Wallace      Have a great day,

. News from the Air Canada Pionair districts.
From the Montreal district 'Sentinel' newsletter.
Quebec Pionairs travel Quebec     By Russ Reynard
As Air Canada retirees we enjoy special travel privileges that take us around
the world. Free or reduced transportation is a wonderful privilege, Europe,
Asia, across North America they are all ours. But hey folks, we found out
that there are lots of things to see right here at home.
Most Quebec Pionairs are Montreal based people, who for the most part, do not
travel further than Dorval airport. In 1997 Quebec City Pionair Michel Beriau
came to the Pionair Committee and volunteered to organize tours of the
Province of Quebec that would take us Montrealers around our province.
Many Pionairs have now experienced Michel's wonderful tours and we have seen
and enjoyed different parts of beautiful Quebec. This year we saw whales off
Tadoussac in the mouth of the St. Lawrence. But first let me go back a
little. We have now had three tours, each tour two very full days. Out of
Montreal, overnight in a first class hotel, and home again. Here are some of
the highlights.
A walking tour of downtown Quebec City, we were guided by local Pionairs who
were proud to show us a bit of their city. We toured Ile d'Orleans where we
saw hundreds of thousands of geese at St. Petronile and we visited a market
and a winery, we sampled wine and tasted delicious smoked fish. We enjoyed a
first class lunch at the Manoir Montmorency  with a close up look at the
famous Montmorency falls.
In June of 1999 we where off  to the Montmagny area of Quebec where  we took a
cruise boat to Grosse-Ile. Grosse-Ile served as a quarantine station from 1832 to 1937.
It was the main gateway for immigrants entering Canada. It is now a Canadian Heritage
Park, we had a guided tour of the entire island and the Irish Memorial that stands there
in memory of the 5000 immigrants, for the most part Irish, who fell victim to
typhoid.
This year on August the 22nd we left Montreal on a brand new five hundred and
thirty six thousand dollar bus. The very latest in touring luxury. Our first
stop was at Ste.Anne de Beaupre with time to visit the grounds and the
spectacular Cathedral. Then onto Baie-St-Paul for lunch and a walk to explore
the shops and art galleries that are all through the village. We were then
taken to our hotel the Manoir Richelieu in Pointe-au-Pic. A buffet dinner and
then to the Casino that is attached to the hotel. Fortunes were neither made
nor lost. The next morning some of our group elected to stay at the hotel,
others played golf on the Richelieu's five star golf course. The rest of us
went on a whale watching cruise to Tadoussac. We were served lunch on board,
enjoyed live entertainment, and best of all we saw many whales. We saw
families of Buluga whales swimming four and five together, beautiful snow
white animals certainly something to remember. We were back in Pointe-au-Pic
in time to meet the rest of our group and travel back to Montreal.
Thank you Michel for these great experiences. Travel around the world is
nice, but you have shown us that travel right here at home can be very
special.

. Vesta, your Chief pilot, spotted this -
Groundbreaking for aviation museum
A row of shovels bit into hard Virginia clay on Wednesday, ancient technology
symbolically breaking ground for the Smithsonian Institution's massive new air and
space center, celebrating the technology that transformed travel in the 20th century.
Able to display just one-tenth of its aviation treasures at the National Air and Space
Museum in downtown Washington, the Smithsonian is building a new annex at Dulles
International Airport.
The $238 million project is scheduled to open in December, 2003, the 100th
anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight. The ceremony opened with the roar of
four Marine Corps FA-18 fighters passing overhead in diamond formation.
Sleek jetliners taking off from the nearby airport rumbled by regularly.
Truth be told, the ground breaking by a dozen or so dignitaries was purely
ceremonial, as massive machines have already begun to transform the 176-acre site
in preparation for the new museum. The connection was kept to the current Air and
Space Museum - the second most-visited museum in the world - by using the same
shovel that broke ground for that building in 1972.
The original Air and Space Museum will remain open.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -

Two different Canadian Airlines Boeing 737s have been chartered by political parties
for the election campaign in Canada.
FIN719 (C-GCPY) is painted up for the Liberal party and is taking the Prime Minister
all over the country and FIN723 (C-GKCP) has "Alliance" logo on the nose with
"Alliance" titles on the fuselage.
Both aircraft have been painted in the basic AC/CP "interim" livery.
One CanadianRegional F-28 jet has been chartered to the PC party as well.

Star Alliance member Austrian Airlines is tentatively planning to operate non-stop
from Vienna to Toronto next summer with their A340 jets.  Stay tuned for details as they become available.   Also, VARIG is tentatively planning to start up a 767-300 service
daily from Rio de Janeiro via JFK to Toronto.

. Trivia!
For those of you waiting at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, after leaving
your life-long savings at the slot machines and hoping for space to plus home, look
around the terminal. On December 4th 1958, a Cessna 172 took off from there on
a non-stop endurance flight. On February 7th 1959, that's 64 days, 22 hours,
19 minutes and 5 seconds later it landed in the Guinness Book of World Records,
a non-stop flight record which remains unbroken today.
With 47 gallons in the wings and everything in the cabin removed  except the pilots
seat  and a mattress added, a  95 gallon fuel tank was installed.
Refuelling took place once a day as the Cessna flew 20 foot above a desert road at
75 miles an hour, a line was dropped down to a fuel truck, a hose was raised up
to the aircraft and 95 gallons of fuel pumped aboard in only 3 minutes.
The Cessna is now suspended over the baggage claim area.
(Perhaps you should view this on arrival when in a better frame of mind, before your
loosing streak! - eds)

. Remember when?
Moncton Airport, NB - Trans-Canada Air Lines inaugurated mail and passenger
service between Moncton and Montreal in 1940 with Walt Fowler, later to become
General Manager Atlantic Region for Air Canada, was the first pilot on this route.

Montreal International Airport in Dorval, west of the city, Trans-Canada Air Lines
commenced operations Sept 1st, 1941 after St. Hubert airport was closed.

. Found on the internet.
Singapore Airlines are looking at the possibility of adding showers to a long list of
on board passenger amenities. A new light weight filtration system which provides
a continuous flow of water using only 5 gallons is being considered - a better
solution to using 20 times that amount of water plus its weight.
Don't know how other passengers would react to those queuing up in a bathrobe
and with soap at the ready.

The 2001 edition of the Airliners calender has an Air Canada jet for August.
