. From the RAPCAN eMailNews issued by Duane Frerichs -
Snowbirds Add Female Pilot to 2001 Team!
ANN has just confirmed that the RCAF Snowbird military Demonstration Team
has become the first major military jet demonstration team to appoint a
woman to a flying team position. The Snowbirds have actually added two
new pilots for the coming season, Wayne "Smutly" Mott
(otherwise known as "Hillbilly" to a few of his friends...)
and (drum roll please!) Maryse "Marcy" Carmicheal!!! Ms. Carmicheal reportedly
hails from the Quebec City area of Canada and is 29 years old.
According to the Snowbird folks, joining their ranks is a tough task...
"All of these highly skilled Canadian Forces professionals have proven
themselves in their field of expertise and submit their applications to the
Commanding Officer (Boss) of the Snowbirds. The pilots have a minimum
of 1300 hours of  military jet experience and are recommended for the
position by their Commanding Officer. From all of the applicants in Canada,
eight members are selected to demonstrate their flying abilities in Moose Jaw
and compete for one of the four available positions.
Ground crew qualified on the CT-114 Tutor aircraft also require their
Commanding Officers' recommendations prior to submitting their name to the
Boss and Crew Chief for one of the four positions available each year.
Those applicants with a history of exceptional performance, displayed
excellent technical knowledge, possess outstanding personalities and reflect
the highest standards of the Canadian Forces are chosen for the position."
We'll have more info on this breaking story shortly and wish Ms. Carmichael
and her fellow pilots all the best for a great and safe season.
We must note that we have spent a fair amount of time with the Snowbirds over
the years (and flown some incredible flights with them... wild!) and have come to appreciate them as extraordinary people with a strong sense of  National pride
and purpose... we are not surprised that the Snowbirds are the first to appoint
a woman to their ranks and look forward to seeing her fly as part of the
amazing 9-ship Snowbird Maple Leaf formation next year.
Congrats to all...

. For those Super Constellation nuts!
*** Old luxury airliner almost ready to fly
The Orlando Sentinel - SANFORD -- After a year of  restoring his 43-year-old
Lockheed 1649A Super Constellation Starliner airplane, Maurice Roundy thinks
the old airliner could soon be ready for takeoff from the Orlando Sanford Airport.
Maine resident Roundy, 55, has been living in Sanford the past year while
resurrecting his Starliner at Starport, which is a fixed-base operation at the
Orlando Sanford Airport. A certified airframe and power-plant mechanic,
commercial pilot, and flight instructor Roundy figures it will take a few more
weeks of restoration and the Starliner could be ready for flight.

. May Day!
From Don Dowie -

My wife, Barbara, and I are now looking toward our retirement years and are
contemplating buying property in Florida.  We will be there for the last two
weeks in December and will spend some time looking for a place.
There may be some of our colleagues from Air Canada days of yore that are in
the Clearwater or Sarasota area?
Perhaps there are other Pionairs that I may know that have settled in the area.
Best regards,  Don Dowie    This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. Smilies.
Slogans from the old Dan-Air, a defunct UK airline absorbed by British Airways -
. Dan-Air: We're British Rail with wings.
. Join our frequent near-miss programme.
. Ask about our out-of-court settlements.
. Our Comets have noisy engines? We will turn them off!
. Complimentary champagne in free fall.
. Enjoy the in-flight movie in the plane next to you.
. The kids will love our inflatable slides.
. You think it's so easy, get your own damn plane.
. Dan-Air: We might be landing on your street.
. Dan-Air: Terrorists are afraid to fly with us.
. So that's what those buttons do!
. Dan-Air: A real man lands where he wants.
. Dan-Air: We never make the same mistake twice.

During the walk-around inspection of a JAL DC-10, the pilot was making sure the
wings and engines were in the right place. The ground engineer noticed there was a
fuel leak from the wing tank. He brought this to the attention of the captain who
nonchalantly dismissed the problem with the comment 'No worries. We get to 30,000
and she freeze up. No problem"
