. Terry spotted this in the book 'Ocean Bridge' -
In 1927, the Government of Canada initiated an experiment known as the
ship-to-shore airmail service to Europe. By using mail planes in
conjunction with ocean liners in the Gulf of St. Lawrence it was possible
to speed up delivery between North America and Europe by more than a day.
The RCAF flew the first flights, and then it was taken over by a private
company named Canadian Transcontinental Airlines, later absorbed by
Quebec Airways. Flying from Dorval the planes made contact with incoming
and outgoing liners at Pointe-au-Pere near Ramouski.
In 1932 the exchange of mail was made at Red Bay, a further 600 miles
east of Pointe-au-Pere thus saving 2 to 3 more days of the transit time
of mail to and from Europe.
(Knowing how long mail takes today, this method is still being used! - eds)

. Those of you interested in the early days of TCA and the CGTAS time
frame may be interested in a book suggested by Charles J.L. Mackie
The book is called "the Water Jump" and is by the author
David Beaty. The ISBN 0-06-010296-9, and Library of Congress catalogue
card number 76-5116. The publishers are Harper & Row and are American.
It is an excellent book and is all about the story of Tranatlantic
Flight, from the very first poeple to attempt the crossing until up to
the present day. Although it is an American publication TCA is mention
in several times in connection with TCA efforts in the early days of the
CGTAS , even had a photograph of the inside of the Lancaster loaded with
Mail and I well remember crawling the length of the aircraft over these
bags of mail to get to the flight compartment.
The book was mailed to me from an old time pilot who was involved in
the early days by the name of Bill Fleig. Senior Capt of Reebok Aviation
in Bedford Mass. He overheard me telling few tales of the early days
over the air and dropped in and said he would forward me the book and to
return when I am finished with it.
It is one of the better books that I have come across re the early
days on the Atlantic, and it sure brought back a lot of memories for me.

. FOUND ON THE INTERNET.
A COLD SHOULDER WITH HOT AIR CONVERGING
A rumor of a possible Canadian air traffic controller's strike in the offing
that would, of course, affect not only Canadian pilots, but American pilots
flying to Alaska. While it is true the Canadian ATC is working without a
contract, and not all is going well in negotiations, the consensus is to
keep negotiating.

. Vesta spotted this gem -
WORRIED ABOUT Y2K? NOW THERE'S D10K
Experts predict financial software may go haywire if the Dow
Jones Industrial Average tops 10,000. Many software programs are
designed to handle only four-digit Dows, says one software designer, who
says that concern over the D10K problem soon "will spawn the usual parade
of opportunists" to fix the bug. (Wall Street Journal 26 Mar 98)
