News from a CAIRE Chapter -
My name is Vern Swerdfeger, part of the Okanagan CAIRE group.
We have urged out 243 retirees in the valley to join the Pionairs.
One of the responses I received from a newsletter I sent out was the following.
I figured it should not be wasted. It is from Edna Jack who lives in Vernon BC
and worked for me in YVR Res in about 1960. Here is her letter.
"I started with the Airline industry during the war (then Trans-Canada Air Lines,
head office in Winnipeg 1941.) In 1942 the National film Board shot a 15 minute
movie of us loading and shipping the first airmail to go from Canada (YWG)
via Gander Nfld with the (very Modern) Beechcraft #39 to Gander then the
Lancaster Bomber to London. I was "the star" loading the bags. I have the still
pictures of this event. When the war was over, all married workers had to give
up their jobs for the returning soldiers.(which was only right).
I then went with NorthWest Airlines for 3 years, then off to BC, due to family
problems. Then to CPA and Mr. Airline himself, Grant McConachie.
I hope everyone remembers Grant pioneered and started the TYO run, the HKG run,
the SYD run, AKL run, AMS run, And the MAD and ROM runs.

Edna later added the fact that she did the loadsheet and other paperwork for
the first DC3 into Canada.

She called to give me her great grandsons email address.

She also advised that her name in the 1940's was Edna Ackerman so that
might shake some memories. She says she has lots of "stuff" and will bring the
pictures to our (CAIRE) lunch on Feb 21.
Vesta - our Chief pilot, adds this comment -
FYI that 15 min movie may still be available for personal viewing from the
National film Board Archives, which I think are in Ottawa or Toronto,
I'm not positive. They may even have a Web site on the internet.
About 15 years ago I was able to research and come up with a "treasure" of
one of our AC friends who did a spot film like that. His was over St Hubert airport.
They loan them out to the public on a security deal of some sort, I think it was
an 8mm film and one can borrow the projector and get a license to run it from
a local public library.
I had a 1 min walk through at Transat airport in Dorval when the
'Come to Canada' fever was high and I had a swanky new fur coat to show off.<G>
how rich Canadians were. That would be in the 50's.

AIR CANADA said late on Thursday it is mulling talks with other
carriers about joining forces to launch a discount carrier in Canada
to serve the domestic and cross-border markets. "We are now
contemplating discussions, in discussions with people that have
approached us about participating with them in the formation of a
low-fare airline," Air Canada President and Chief Executive, Robert
Milton, told analysts during a conference call.

. Remember when?
Rouyn Airport, QC. Trans-Canada Air Lines service with DC-3 began in Nov 1955,
introduces Vickers Viscount in 1958 and DC9 in 1974.
St Hubert Airport QC. In 1938, Trans-Canada Air Lines began services with
Lockheed Electra until the move to Dorval in 1941.
On Feb 4th 1962, Britannia CF-CZC of CPAir replaced DC6B on HNL-SYD route.
On 2nd Apr 1962, Britannia CF-CBZ of CPAir introduced Britannia service to
YVR-Whitehorse. This aircraft was written off at HNL 23/7/62.

. In a recently read book "Flying the frontiers" -
Dawn Dawson was working for Range Airways out of Churchill MB doing aerial survey
work in 1963. Piloting a super turbo-charged Apache between 18,000 and 25,000 ft.
"I was flying out of Edmonton at 23,000 ft'" she adds "We had arranged to have a
block of line that actually belonged to one of the present airways. I could hear
Air Canada take off with the DC-8, but they, of course, deviated and went around.
When one captain asked air traffic controller why he had to deviate, he was told that
we were doing some photography in the area. Then they called me to get my
position. The Air Canada captain heard a female voice on the air and asked,
quite incredulous, "Are you a girl?" I said "Yes, sir." "What are you flying?"
"An Apache." He comes back "No. no, they'll never believe this. A girl in
an Apache flying at 23,000, and I have to go around her!"

A man called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong
with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean view room.
When I tried to explain this was not possible as Orlando was in the middle of
Florida, he replied "Don't lie to me. I looked at a map and Florida is a very
thin state".
A woman called and said "I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola on one of those
computer planes." I asked if she meant to fly to Pensacola on a commuter
plane and she said "Yeah. Whatever."
