. Need to know.
On October 19, Air Canada will start A340 non-stop service between
Vancouver and New Delhi four times a week. This route represents the
only non-stop link between North America and India and will inaugurate
Air Canada's first polar route it will shave more than four hours off traditional
routings. The seasonal service, subject to regulatory approval, will run from
October to April.

The latest Air Canada schedule for downloading is effective March 9th until Oct 27th.

Subject: Bristol Freighter Coincidence
I thought the readers might find this connection interesting. I received this
postal letter in reference to my photo of the Bristol Freighter I took on assignment
in the NWT in 1968. It is in the Canadian Airlines Photo Gallery off the RAPCAN
website.

Having recently discover the TCA/Air Canada Rapcan web site and the
photos of not only personnel I knew, but aircraft I flew, I am asking for your assistance.
A book I am attempting to write involves my flying career from 1949 to the
present and includes the years 1951 to 1959 with TCA, flying as an F/O DC3's,
Northstars and Connies mostly Trans-At, then Capt. on Northstars domestic.
From 1965 to 1970 I flew Bristols in the North.
What intrigues me is the photo of a Bristol Freighter labeled Hope Lake.
I believe it is CF TFX and if the date is correct [it is - ed.], I was flying it at the time.
I flew it for several years in the Arctic and flew it's last flight before Wardair gave
it to the town of Yellowknife where it now rests on a pedestal at the airport.
Possibly of further interest, it was first flown by a former TCA Captain,
possibly Herb Hobson, and last flown by a former TCA Captain, myself.
We did many odd-ball flights with TFX including landing at the North Pole
and on the Mein Ice Cap. Took a D4 Cat landing on the beach at Sherrard Bay
and roughed out a strip for the first C130 flight that started the Arctic oil field
exploration of the late 60's
After parking TFX Wardair bought 3 more Bristol's from the Canadian
Air Force, reg's WAC, WAD and WAE . . .
Bottom line: Do you have any photos of the ex TCA Bristols that I could
beg, borrow, steal or buy and your permission to include same in my book . . . ?

Rare Plane Retrieved in Venezuela

A Dutch expedition has salvaged the wreckage of a rare, antique twin-engine
passenger plane that crashed in the Venezuelan jungle in 1937.
The wreckage of the Fokker-8 was beside an  isolated airstrip in a jungle clearing
near the Indian village of Uruyen in the  southeastern state of Bolivar, 500 miles
from Caracas.
The 15-passenger Fokker-8 is the only remaining model of its kind in the world.
The Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker made only one prototype and 10 reproductions
in 1928.
Because passengers sat three abreast, the plane is considered one of the
first ``wide-bodied'' passenger airplanes.

- Iceland Plane Crash.
Two U.S. women heading to Britain to participate in a long-distance air race
died when their twin-engine plane crashed into the sea off Iceland shortly after
takeoff.
Pilot Barbara Gard, 52, and her navigator Gwen Bloomingdale, 58, both
experienced fliers, had taken off from Iceland's Keflavik International Airport
in an Aero Commando 560 aircraft en route to Stornoway, Scotland.
The cause of the crash has not been determined.
The women had been due to participate in the London-to-Sydney 2001
flying race.

Air Georgian Ltd. (dba Air Alliance) announced today that it will begin two new
routes from Montreal.
On Monday, April 9th the airline will launch new service connecting
Montreal-Dorval with Albany NY with two trips per weekday and reduced service
on weekends.  On the same day, Air Alliance will begin a new service between
Montreal and Manchester NH with two flights each business day and reduced
service on weekends.
All flights will be operated with their 18-passenger Beech 1900D equipment.

Effective May 21st Air Canada Regional Inc. will increase service on the
Vancouver to Prince Rupert route to three daily jet flights using the
Fokker F-28 jets.

According to an article in the Montreal Gazette, some of the regional carriers
are looking at switching their flights from Montreal-Dorval airport to
Saint Hubert airport on the south side of the St.Lawrence river.
Dorval airport is now so heavily congested, several regional airlines operating
there are worried they might be forced to leave.
Plus, the planned-though unannounced-demolition of five large hangars
used by Air Canada, Royal Airlines, Air Inuit, Air Creebec and others makes
Saint-Hubert that much more a possible alternative to Dorval.
The Saint-Hubert airport has a 7840' runway and is home to Pratt & Whitney
engines, among other tenants.

time to time, we thought his bio may be of interest - eds).

Captain Donald (Ken) Patry
Toronto Base
Captain Ken Patry joined Air Canada on August 2, 1965.
Prior to his start with Air Canada, Ken had been flying various singles,
light twins, PBY-5A Canso, DC6 and DC7 aircraft.  He has flown a total of
17740 hours at Air Canada, on Viscount, DC9, DC8, B727, B767,
B747 Classic and 400, and Lockheed Electra L10A CF-TCC.
Ken will be retiring effective April 30, 2001.
Ken says there are many memorable moments to chose from, including the
month he spent as his father's F/O on the DC8 as well as flying the
Lockheed 10A across Canada, meeting employees from all departments.
Last, but not least, the five years of flying the 400 - "What an airplane"!.
Ken learned to fly at the Brampton Flying Club in 1957.  Over the years he
has flown for charter companies, Canadian Pacific Airlines and
Pacific Western Airlines.  He plans on doing some travelling with his
wife Georgina, flying his Cessna 195 more, and visiting his son Phillip
and daughter Vanessa.

. Remember when?
Canada's first airline was Laurentide Air Services carrying prospectors and trappers
between Haileybury, Ontario and Angliers, Quebec. The airline folded in 1924.

Inaugural flight by CPA from Vancouver to Whitehorse was May 24th 1944, the
crew consisted of Capt. George Jarvis, First Officer Larry Dakin and
stewardess Eleanor Black.

The DC10 be3came known as the "Douglas Diner" amongst the front end crew
of CAIL. The DC10 was the only 3 pilot aircraft and the second officer's seat
with table was a place for all DC10 pilots to eat rather than endure balancing a meal
on their laps.

Britain dismisses report of air force drinks spree
Britain's Defence Ministry rejected a newspaper report recently
that four air force pilots flew Harrier jump jets to Spain so they
could go on a weekend drinking session.
Two of the pilots were pictured in Britain's mass-selling Sun tabloid downing
pints of beer in Madrid under the headline "Top Fun."
In a three-page report on the "jolly," slang for an all-expenses paid trip,
the paper tracked the pilots quaffing beer and red wine at a succession of
restaurants and bars in the Spanish capital.
Angry colleagues were said to have tipped off reporters about the three-day
trip, during which the men stayed at a five-star hotel.
But the Defence Ministry said the trip was totally legitimate.
"That was a routine operational training flight overseas," a spokesman said.
"There's no suggestion as far as the Royal Air Force is concerned that their
behaviour was questionable."
