Ref to Airport tax at YVR as listed in NetLetter nr 803 -
Syd Jacobs sends this observation -
Under Exemptions - item 2
It states Transit/Transfer passengers (Next possible connectin: 24 hours -
international - 4 hours Domestic/Transborder.
In order to make the flight at 08:45 a.m. YVR to HNL we must over nite in
YVR. This means arrriving YVR by the late flight the previous evening. We
have been charged the Airport Tax even though it was pointed out that we
had arrived YVR by the last flight to connect with the HNL flight the next
morning. This is the only possible way to make the connection. In this
instance we feel that the 4 hour connection for Transborder flight should
be extended to cover overnite lay overs. Might be interesting if this is
brought to the attention to the Airport authorities.
Cheers.

. Vesta found these on the internet -
GREAT DAYS IN AVIATION HISTORY
At about 12:35 p.m., at Kill Devil Hills, N.C, Dec 16,2003. EAA's Wright
Experience replica Wright Flyer pilot Kevin Kochersberger and crew attempted
a launch ... and failed to fly. In front of 35,000 visitors (still wet from
a morning downpour) and millions of worldwide television viewers, the very
expensive, very time consuming project ended its historic journey into the
past slightly damaged and in a puddle at the end of a 200-foot portable
runway/rail. EAA President Tom Poberezny said that the wind dropped below
the minimum 10 knots required for liftoff from the length of rail and high
humidity reduced engine rpm and output by several horsepower. But apparently
the team thought it best to try anyway.
...SHOWCASES AVIATION'S OLD FOILS (WEATHER)...
The planned 10:35 a.m. launch was delayed by a downpour that soaked visitors
and would have made the Flyer too heavy to fly well, according to The Wright
Experience founder Ken Hyde. A subsequent flight, following the first (less
successful) one was anticipated later in the afternoon, but a frontal
passage accompanied by shifting, gusty winds prevented it. No subsequent
public flight of the Flyer was announced. The aircraft was purchased for
display in the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich. President George W. Bush
talked exclusively about the achievements of the Wright Brothers and other
aviation heroes and dispelled rumors by making no announcement of a new
manned-space program. The President's party arrived and departed in
helicopters a few hundred feet from the site where Orville Wright flew the
Flyer 120 feet in 12 seconds 100 years ago.

PHOTOGRAPHING, FINGERPRINTING BEGINS FOR U.S. VISITORS
For many travellers, getting into the United States just got a lot more
complicated. As of Jan. 5, visitors from many parts of the world will be
fingerprinted and photographed before being allowed to enter.

. Found on the internet.
DUBAI AIRPORT GOES UNDERGROUND
A $4.1 billion underground terminal is the centerpiece of an ambitious
expansion
at Dubai International Airport. The new facility is being burrowed into the
desert sand in what workers call the "mother of all holes." The excavation
measures more than 1,000,000 square feet and when the terminal is finished,
passengers will park their cars, check in and relax in restaurants and lounges
35 feet under the airport apron. Locally based Emirates Airlines will be the
only tenant.

Singapore Airlines receives its first Airbus A340-500. Last Friday, Singapore
Airlines took delivery of its first ultra long-haul aircraft, a new Airbus
A340-500. This is the first new aircraft type for Singapore Airlines since
1997. The aircraft will offer the longest daily non-stop commercial service in
the world when it commences operations between Singapore and Los Angeles on
Feb. 3. The scheduled flight duration will be 16 hours, while the return flight
is expected to last 18 hours and 30 minutes. Some minor changes were made to
the seating configuration to ensure that passengers on these longer flights are
more comfortable. One such change includes the removal of a line of seats in
economy class cabin. By mid-2004, Singapore Airlines will introduce a similar
daily service from Singapore to New York which will take 18 hours in each
direction.

. We regretfully advise the passing of one of our readers -
