Abbotsford base to close. On March 1, ZIP will no longer fly to Abbotsford
B.C.,
in order to concentrate on flying more profitable routes. Air Canada Jazz began
flying to Abbotsford in the summer of 2001. ZIP took over Abbotsford flying
last spring, utilizing Jazz agents at the airport. In the current low-yield
environment, the B737 aircraft currently serving Abbotsford will be redeployed
to more profitable routes. As the smaller Bombardier and Embraer jets enter the
fleet, the company will look at returning to markets such as Abbotsford.
Air Canada provides more flight choices for “sun” destinations. Starting this
weekend the company is expanding service to “sun” and “fun” destinations. As
of Feb. 7, we’re offering customers weekly Saturday flights from Halifax to
Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic, and on Feb. 8, we’re launching weekly
Sunday flights from Halifax to Cancun, Mexico.

I was just a kid of 18, fresh out of Radio School in
Saint John NB, when my twin brother Gord
and I decided that to work in Aviation Radio in the
busiest airport in Canada would look good on future resumes.
Flying up on a TCA DC3, we were met by a fellow D.O.T
(Transport Canada) employee who took us over to the
"Mercroft Inn/Boarding house" on the lakeshore.
Many Airport/TCA employees used these accommodations, and
the owners gladly let us stay there on credit for 6 weeks until the first
paycheque arrived. They were used to these situations.
Dorval Airport was originally planned to be a BCATP airfield
but St Huberts was becoming to small to handle TCA flights along
with the new "Ferry Command" aircraft. About the fall of 1941, civil
operations were moved to Dorval.
Even in 1952, except along the Lakeshore, the area had not
built up too much. The little Train Station stood between the town
of Dorval and the Airport and other than the Airport complex,
open fields were prevalant. On a fine day,a leisure walk of the
couple of miles to work from the Mercroft was possible.

Scroll down and take a look at the terminal on this picture from
TCA Archives taken in the late 40's.
In Peter Pigott's History of TCA, he notes that the
terminal was modelled on the one at Washington's National Airport,
with its wide lobby like a 4 star hotel.
Looking from airside, to the left would be TCA North Star and
DC3 on the ramp. Inside the Terminal , on the left was TCA
checkin, about 3 positions plus ticketing and behind were
TCA operations/radio etc along with baggage assembly.
I dont recall any conveyor belts so baggage was likely
"man handled" back to the carts.
Across the lobby were small counters for Northeast Airlines
/Colonial/ and CPA. Parked on that side of the ramp appears
to be a Colonial DC4 and a NEA Convair 240 and a CP or NE DC3.
The terminal did have a small restaurant with counter stool and a few
tables,
located just to the right of the main entrance.
Transport Canada's Radio Operators handled all radio operations
except TCA and we were located on the second floor.
Four positions were normally manned,including CPA, Northeast Airlines,
Colonial Airlines plus a position for regular weather broadcasts
and other aircraft.

CPA used a fleet of DC3's to cover their route extending down the
St. Lawrence including YQB/Bagotville/Rimouski/Mont Joli/
Sept Isles/Magdelans.
West route included Rouyn and Val D'or. Some of these CPA
stations would also send us, by Morse Code, the hourly airport weather
which we would relay to the weather office.
These were the routes that were traded off to TCA later in 1956
Northeast Airlines, like TCA, started out as an offshoot of a Railway
in the early 1930's. First with the Boston&Maine and then the
Central Vermont ( The CNR interesting enough,owned part of the C.V.)
Originally named National Airways, it flew a couple of Lockheed 10a's
and added DC3's in 1941 and DC4's in 1946 along with Convair 240's in 49..
The name was changed to NEA in 1940 and eventually became Delta.
A look at an old schedule shows how their "milk run'
followed closely the rail line.

Colonial Airlines, originally called Canadian Colonial, a Canadian
owned company, also had an early history flying into Montreal.
As early as 1930, scheduled flights were operating LGA/ALB/YHU
LGA/BTV/YHU and in 1937, on to YOW. Their Timetable indicated
DC3's in the late 30's and 40's.Flying skiers north to enjoy the
Laurentiens was popular as this picture shows.

After the war, they added DC4's and routes were extended to
include BDA and DCA along with cities in NY State.
The Canadian Colonial name was changed to Colonial in 1942
and eventually to EAL in 1955.
All inter national flights were handled from the Intl Terminal.
This was located up the ramp,to the right of the Domestic Terminal.
I,m not too familar with this Terminal although I worked the
Trans Atlantic radio circuits from this building for a while.
I believe it was an old wooden building built for wartime use
and Airlines using it would be TCA/BOAC/KLM.
This is only a brief outline as I remember YUL

Clipped wings BA Outbid For Heathrow Slots
Qantas and Virgin Atlantic have trumped British Airways by paying record sums
for scarce take-off and landing slots at London's congested Heathrow airport.
The Australian flag carrier, a BA partner, has paid pounds 20m - up to twice
the normal rate - for two pairs of daily slots, industry sources said. Virgin
has paid a similar sum for four pairs.
"They've certainly paid top dollar, in fact a shedload of money," sources said
of deals which are traditionally conducted in a grey market rather than by open
auction.
The moves by Qantas and Virgin are seen as underlining a more optimistic future
for sales and growth in an industry ravaged by falling passenger numbers and
revenues.
The much prized slots belonged to FlyBE, the low-cost carrier once known as
British European and owned by family trusts set up by the late Sir Jack Walker,
former millionaire owner of Blackburn Rovers.
The loss-making airline, based in Exeter, reported increases of up to 70% in
passengers flown last year from regional airports such as Southampton and
Belfast, Birmingham and Bristol.
BA, which is expected to announce plans for a further pounds 300m-plus
cost-cutting programme next month, paid about pounds 12m last autumn for a pair
of Heathrow slots owned by United Airlines - and, earlier, a relatively modest
pounds 35m for eight Swiss International daily slots. It has 40% of the total.
Virgin said it planned to extend its services from Heathrow to the US, as well
as to Africa and Asia.

Southwest Airlines is beginning the seventh year of its Adopt-A-Pilot
program,
in which fifth-grade students across the country get to follow the travels of
one of 450 volunteer pilots who take them along for the ride in a variety of
ways. Some communicate by e-mail or send postcards, giving clues and asking
students to figure out where the messages originate. Others take digital
pictures of a toy they take to various U.S. cities while some get their
passengers involved by asking them to write notes to class members. Along the
way, the kids learn about the math, science, writing and geography skills
involved in air travel that can be applied to other areas of their lives.
