Henry Anderson sent us this -

I expect you read in the papers last week about two fine upstanding Canadians
who live in New York were the cause for an AA flight enroute to LHR had to
divert to SNN because of these two. The end result was that both spent Fri,
Sat,and Sun in jail and were in court on Mon. the judge fined them 60000 US
dollars. one got 3 and the other 7 months suspended jail sentence and bared
from flying for two years.
I understand that another airline took them back to New York They do not fool
around with this kind of thouble at Shannon

10th Dec                    ACRA Christmas Dinner Dance at BA Concorde Club

Round-up  of  Social  Events:

We had a great time at our Old Tyme Music Hall with everyone joining in with
the songs, and having a ride on the Merry-go-Round.   We wished Thelma Berry a
“Happy Birthday” on the way home on the bus  she was 87 years young a couple of
days later.   The coach driver handed in a red hat which someone had left on
the coach.   Please claim from Jack.   Thanks to Peter King for helping to
organise this event.  A reminder that, on our events, we do require the
appropriate slips to be filled in and sent in with any monies.   It does help
and saves us making up a form for the individuals.   The next ACRA theatre trip
has been booked for 6th September and is
“Jailhouse Rock”.   All theatre trips leave at 6.00 pm from Radius Park unless
otherwise stated.   Don’t forget our popular tour of the West End and
surrounding area.   The coach leaves Radius Park at 6.30 pm and will include a
pub stop halfway round.   We are almost half-full already.

The St. Omer cross-Channel trip is now confirmed and more details will be in
the next newsletter.   Our North American trip to Phoenix has proved very
popular with 58 booked on the coach, and a waiting list of 26.   All
arrangements and attractions have been confirmed.   Separate information sheets
are sent with each month’s newsletter.

Our last event this year is our Christmas lunch which will be held again at the
Savill Court Hotel  our third lunch at this venue.   Last year 134 attended,
and we anticipate more will be there this year.

Edward B.K.James, Retiree #094153
Originally, I was with CP from 1959 - 1989, first as an Airport Agent
in YUL/YYZ/HNL then a CTO Agent in YVR and YYZ, then spent 18 years as a Sales
Rep,
mainly in YHMSD and finally YYZSD where I was forced into retirement when the
Wardair event took over the running of the old PWA. Many of us got the heave-ho
on the
same day.
Sad for me at the time, because it took me about 10 years to get over the
airline and travel industry.
Many in the Okanagan will remember me, because I
started a retirees group for CP Air retirees in the early '90's, and
they still meet, which pleases me no end, as I am a lifetime honoray
ex-president, having been the first.
As for others, I'm sure that they are all over Canada, and I wouldn't
mind hearing from some old friends from by-gone days, when the Airline
business was so exciting and so much fun !

. Found on the internet.
Emrites is to offer the world's first regular, airnorne wireless laptop
service.
The Dubai-based international airline will launch the feature soon onboard all
of its new Airbus A340-500's.
With the new service, passengers can uise their own email accounts, including
corporate e-mail, in a secure environment. The A340-500 will be the first
aircraft to include a wireless LAN certified for passengers' own Wi-Fi-enabled
laptop computers.

One of the main requirements for the hiring of flight attendants in 1939 -
called stewardesses back then - was that they be registered nurses. This
remained a requirement until 1957 for most airlines in north America. Other
requirements were: they had to be single, no more than 5 foot 4 inches in
stature and no more that 115 pounds.
(Before the introduction of the jumbo aircraft!)

The WWII Canso, one of two which have languished at Nanaimo airport for the
past decade, has finally left for the U.K.  having been purchase from its
Malaysian owner by Catalina Aircraft Ltd. The rebuilt aircraft is now ready to
take up duties in aerial photography.

New Toronto start-up AeroFalcon has delayed plans to operate a service from
Toronto to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka with two leased B747-400
as they are awaiting clearances to operate the North Pole route.

. Help!
In 1967, Marian Talbot made a figurine and she gave it to me when
Jack was working. I have cherished it for all these years and
would like to give it to her family if they want it. I don't
know how to get in touch with them, although I believe Marian
died some time ago. Can anybody help me with this little
project?
Thanks.

I will be your team leader, Jess Rougeau.  This is the 5th trip I've organized
and we usually have a great time together.  Have heard from a Pionair who took
the trip last year and commented that it was the
BEST!!  Especially the Irish Cabaret in Dublin -- but I also like the Waterford
Crystal Factory and the Beleek China that we will be visiting plus castles and
a beautiful country.

Hope you come along.
