. Dreams take flight news -
More kids off to meet Mickey and the gang. – For the 15th year, Toronto,
the original chapter of Dreams Take Flight, turns wishes into reality.
Early in the morning
of May 12th.,, 255 physically, mentally and socially challenged children
from Ontario and Buffalo, New York, waved goodbye to their parents,
siblings and volunteers of the Toronto chapter of Dreams Take Flight, and
boarded two Air Canada Boeing 767s bound for Walt Disney World. For many of
these children it was their first time on a plane or being away from their
families. But the dream of going to Orlando, Florida to meet Mickey Mouse
and all his friends, and trying out as many rides in a day as possible,
kept the smiles on their faces. Much later tonight, they will return happy
and very tired children with memories that will last them a lifetime.
Congratulations to all the volunteers who’ve worked hard all year long to
ensure these children’s dreams turned into reality.

B747's as water bombers!
By July 4 of this year, Evergreen International Aviation hopes to gain
independence from firefighting the old-fashioned way. The McMinnville,
Oregon-based company is working with the FAA to obtain certification for
Evergreen "Supertankers") -- retrofit Boeing 747s capable of carrying
24,000 gallons of fire retardant each. Supertanker spokesman Justin
Marchand tells AVweb the flight-test aircraft has made more than 50 flights
and 82 drops and carried 536,000 gallons -- 1.5 million pounds -- of
retardant. Why a 747? "I like the analogy 'why send in a single soldier
when you can send in the army,'" says Marchand.
Airbus 'creams' Boeing.
Citizens of Toulouse, France, and European aircraft maker Airbus celebrated
as a "gigantic" new assembly line for the new super-jumbo A380 was unveiled
to acclaim and many other fine adjectives last week. Airbus, the consortium
of European companies, has (according to the numbers) displaced Boeing as
the world's leading producer of commercial aircraft. That sits very poorly
with Washington Sen. Patty Murray, who railed against U.S. inaction during
comments Thursday on the Senate floor. Murray, who is up for re-election
this year, says Europe is engaging in unfair trade practices that are
resulting in the "subsidized slaughter" of American companies.

Subject: Gordon McGregor honoured
Gordon R. McGregor, first full time president of TCA/Air Canada
(1948-1968), was inducted into Canada's Business Hall of Fame in Toronto
on May 4. Conducting the induction of McGregor was chairman emeritus Claude
Taylor.
Mr. Taylor's guests included captains Rob Giguere, Ron Dennis and
wives, Peter Taylor and Ross Smyth and wife.
The gala celebration dinner recognized 26 years of business leadership in
support of Junior Achievement of Canada. Living inductees were Richard
Haskayne, David O'Brien and Gerald Schwartz.
Gordon Roy McGregor, fighter pilot and aviation pioneer, was born in
Montreal, educated at St.Andrews in Toronto and at McGlll University with
a degree in engineering. Upon graduation he joined Bell Canada. In 1932 he
was promoted district manager in Kingston, Ontario. There he indulged his
childhood love of aviation and began taking flying lessons. When war
broke out, McGregor, now a central district manager based in Montreal,
enlisted
in the air force.
McGregor's heroism as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain earned him
the Flying Cross and many other medals of valour from the grateful nations
of Europe. After the war he joined Trans-Canada Air Lines. Within three
years he became its president. The postwar years were turbulent times for
the growing airline. Under McGregor's guidance Trans-Canada Air Lines was
renamed Air Canada in 1965, became a natinal institution and a leading
world carrier. Gordon McGregor passed away in March 1971 at the age of
69.
In accepting the award, Claude Taylor, chairman emeritus of Air Canada,
said he considered McGregor his idol and aviation mentor.

Your co-pilot recently went on another cruise, here is part 1 of a report -
Mediterranean Cruise on NCL
Sunday Apr 4th
Our trip started today with our friends dropping us off at Nanaimo
International Airport for the 10:35 Jazz flight DH8 en route to Vancouver.
While checking in, we verified the weight of the 2 bags we will use for the
Ryanair flight from the UK, which restricts each person to one checked
luggage no more than 15 kgs, and a carry-on up to 7 kgs.
Our flight from Vancouver to London Heathrow was in J class on an Airbus
A330, which was great. The flight attendants were just that - very
attentive and the food good. We made good flight time, and arrived at
London Heathrow 35 minutes early, but this saving of time diminished as
there was no gate available - an occupational hazard with early arrivals
- so our flight really arrived on time. Not so our luggage, just six
suitcases appeared on the carrousel after 20 minutes, with the balance
arriving 20 minutes later. What a frustrating wait, during which, we
exchanged our Canadian for Sterling currency.
Our friends arrived to collect us just as we emerged from the terminal,
good timing as the traffic wardens are quite ferocious in moving traffic
along, as no parking was tolerated, all part of the security.
We spent a lazy evening with our friends, catching up on gossip from
the previous years meeting..
Tuesday Apr 6th.
Another lazy kind of day. We went shopping at one of our favourite
store Marks and Spencers, and made several purchases. As we were due to
get up at some unearthly hour the next day, we did not attempt to do
anything too dynamic.
Wednesday Apr 7th.
At last, the magic day has arrived the long awaited cruise in the
Western Mediterranean on the Norwegian Dream from Rome to Dover.
Up at 02:00 in the early hours of the morning, for our taxi to Stansted
Airport and the Ryanair flight to Rome. Our taxi was only 5 minutes late in
collecting us, but with the roads virtually devoid of traffic, we had a
fast and comfortable ride.
Upon arrival at Stansted, we had the feeling that Ryanair had taken over
the whole of the airport facilities they were certainly prominent.
There were no TV monitor screens to tell you which check in desk
operated our flight, so we asked, and were directed to nr 175. Let me tell
you, almost every check in desk had a very very long queue, but the check
in process was very simplified, and we got through quickly, even had time
for a coffee with the rest of our group, whom we met up with in the queue
for the flight, making 8 in total, the ‘Group of 8’ as we call ourselves,
having done various cruises and trips together.
Seating on the aircraft is ‘first come, first served’, so it is
advisable to get through security and to the gate quickly. Fortunately our
group were able to get seats near each other. The aircraft, a Boeing
B737-800 had 175 same class passengers, and definitely ‘no frills’.
On the back of each seat was a pricelist of food and drink. Sandwiches at
gbp3.75, Hot soup/Coffee/Tea/soft drinks at gbp1.60 each, served on the
aircraft. We had brought our own food, pre packed sandwiches from Marks and
Spencers at gbp2.10 and salad at gbp1.60. We also had bottled water.
At Ciampino Rome airport, we went quickly through security after
collecting our luggage, and located the driver we had booked for the trip
to the cruise ship which was an hours drive away.
Once at the docks, although we could see the Norwegian Dream amongst the
other cruise ships, we did not know how to get there, but after driving
around for five minutes or so, the driver asked for directions, and we
finally arrived at Pier #8.
Processing was extremely quick, and we had our picture taken, as a
security measure, and ID cards to be used on and off the cruise ship which,
when swipped in the computer, brings up the photograph of the owner for
physical identification.
Our tickets, arranged by Dargal Interline for the 12 day cruise on the
Norwegian Dream, and gave us ‘run of the ship’. Although the charge was for
inside cabins, we were all assigned outside cabins, with 2 portholes each
cabin such luxury!
After locating our cabins, we went for lunch, then back to the cabins to
unpack and rest up until the inevitable boat drill. After orientating
ourselves, we went to supper at 18:30, followed by the theatre and an early
night.
Notes:-
- Our cruise visits ports in the European Community and, Non EC guests
may get their certificates of purchase stamped by customs at the airports
upon departing the country. When you make purchases from any store, ensure
they display a decal advising that they are participating in the duty free
sales, and get your certificate validated by the store, together with an
envelope in order to mail your signed certificate for a refund of the Value
Added Tax.
- When exchanging currencies at airports, especially when served by Air
Canada, you may be able to avoid the commission by showing your Air Canada
ID card.
- Cost of a taxi from Watford to Stansted Airport was gbp54.00
- Ryanair airfare from Stansted to Ciampino, Rome was gbp18.99 plus
gbp13.80 tax plus gbp1.75 credit card fee total gbp34.54 per person one way.
- We had a Mercedes Sprinter van which comfortably accommodated all 8 of
us plus our luggage. and the charge was euro135 for the hours run on
excellent roads to Civitavecchia.
- The company we booked for our shuttle was one of several we contacted
prior to leaving for our trip.
