Air Canada issues a travel advisory for flights to and from Paris. Today,
Air Canada was instructed by the Paris airport authority, Aeroports de
Paris (ADP), to move our operations from Terminal Two to Terminal One
effective tomorrow, June 11, due to the ADP’s decision to reassign airport
facilities in response to the unexpected closure of Charles de Gaulle
Airport Terminal 2E. Air Canada therefore advises customers travelling to
and from Paris that they will be arriving and departing from Terminal One
CDG until further notice. Customers in Paris will now check-in for Air
Canada flights at Terminal One Door 4 area, and flights will arrive at
Terminal One Satellite Two. To minimize inconvenience we are making every
effort to contact affected customers using all available contact
information. This unanticipated terminal relocation will likely result in
some delays to flights from Paris in the coming days as the company will
endeavour to accommodate connecting passengers to the best of our ability.
We regret any inconvenience this unexpected change to our operations may
cause our customers and we will continue to communicate developments as
United places a temporary embargo on other airline employee travel. In an
effort to meet operational needs due to a high volume of revenue travel
bookings, starting today, June 10 until June 17, United has placed an
employee travel embargo on some of their international destinations for
certain space-available travellers. Those not permitted to travel include
active and retired employees of other airlines, such as Air Canada, Air
Canada Jazz and ZIP and their spouses, parents, partners and family
members. The embargo applies to flights from the U.S. to Europe between
June 10-17 and also for flights from Europe to the U.S. from June 15 to
July 1. Furthermore, there is an embargo for flights from Amsterdam and
London to the U.S. from June 15 to Aug. 1.

Air Canada is to take delivery of two Airbus A340-500's which have been
in storage in France for almost a year. Air Canada was due to become the
launch customer for this model but delivery was deferred due to bankrupt
proceedings. Airbust has offered the two aircraft
to a number of different airlines, but are being ferried back to Toulouse
for final checks before being delivered. Airbus has cancelled the two
A321's and three A340-600 models.

United Airlines took one more step toward emerging from bankruptcy
protection recently after reaching an agreement with the United Retiree
Coalition, which represents the carrier's salaried and management retirees
and nearly all unionized pre-July 1, 2003, retirees, regarding
modifications to retiree medical and life insurance benefits.

. Final part of the NCL Mediterranean cruise -
Lisbon, a city we have visited many many times, and enjoyed it each time.
We were docked several miles from the city. To get to the city transport,
there is a long walk alongside the docks, and a tunnel to the road under
the July 24th bridge, where the train or bus service is available.
We had arrived at Lisbon several hours ahead of schedule. At noon, NCL
operated a free shuttle to the city, but, as we had arrived ahead of
schedule by several hours, many passengers had walked about a mile to the
main road and caught transport to the city centre, being unaware that a
shuttle was being organized - free too boot!.
As we had visited the town before, we decided to visit an old frigate
which had been restored and was docked near the cruise ship. For just
euro1.50, everyone gets a small hand held recorder and earphones. Each
exhibit is numbered, and one punches in the appropriate number to hear
information about the exhibit. The ship has three masts, and was a warship
in the late 1800’s.
On our return, we bought 4 cans of beer from the store at the terminal,
and took them on board with us and security did not confiscate them.
Friday Apr 16th.
The first of 2 days at sea before LeHavre.
What does one do at sea? Eat!
Each day, during our cruise, we have partaken in the various trivia games,
and have been quite successful with the prizes a canvas tote bag, a
lithograph, packs of cards but no free cruise!
Today, we signed the waiver re the automatic gratuities system as we plan
to give gratuities to those who had served us.
Saturday Apr 17th.
Final day at sea, across the Bay of Biscay, which was rather docile,
except for several hours of porpoising an up and down motion bow to stern.
Amazing how the sea can move such a large vessel. An afternoon show was a
talent competition. 3 girls, two aged 11 and one 12, sang in chorus,
excellent, then the 12 year old sang solo and stole the show. The adults
were represented poorly by just two males.
Tonight, we start packing our main suitcases ready for tomorrow night
when we have to deposit them outside our cabin for off loading.
Sunday Apr 18th.
Our final day the weather was just dreadful, but most of the Brits were
undeterred and went seeking taxis to take them to the local Hypermarket to
stock up on their booze and cigarettes. Unfortunately, being Sunday they
are closed. However a taxi for 4 would have cost euro15.00 one way.
Monday Apr 19th.,
We have arrived in Dover at the conclusion of our cruise. We were docked
at the West terminal and had to take a taxi to the East terminal to connect
with the National Coach line to Victoria. Taxi cost was gbp8.00.
The coach cost gbp5.50 one way to Victoria for senior rate. It is best to
purchase your ticket from the ticket office located in the East terminal
rather than on the coach, as the coach can get rather full. We were in time
for the 9:15 and when we booked were told the 9:15 and 10:15 were full so
we booked the 11:15. The booking agent suggested we check with the driver
in case they had no shows which we did and which he had! So we got an
early start to our journey home.
Incidentally, NCL coach to Victoria or Heathrow or Gatwick cost us$75.00 each.
Whilst on the coach, our friends called ahead to have their local car hire
meet us at Victoria and the timing was great as the car turned up minutes
ahead of our arrival. We got to Watford, where we were staying over night
at our friends home, by just after mid day.
Despite it being mid day, the traffic through London was very light - a
result of the new regulations restricting vehiclular traffic in the centre
of London, on penalty of a large fine.
We understand that people living within the restricted zone must pay
gbp3.75 per day to park, else they park outside the zone and find other
means to get home.
Tuesday Apr 20th.
Goodbye to Watford, our friends drove us to Heathrow for our 13.35
departure to Vancouver. Although Hospitality was oversold, there was room
in J class, and we were fortunate in getting on. One of our group, who
works on the ramp at the airport, came onboard the aircraft to check that
we had the best seats and to ensure we were leaving the country. We meet up
again in September.
Whilst checking in, we had the agent check the Nanaimo flight, and there
were 12 open seats, so everything looked good. We had an hour to make the
connection at Vancouver. Our flight was excellent, the crew very attentive
to all the passengers in J. The flight landed at Vancouver 35 minutes
early, and there was no delay in getting to the gate. We hustled off the
plane, zipped thru immigration and waited an age for our luggage, which
finally arrived. We went straight to the Jazz desk outside the customs
hall, no one in the queue so thought everything was going great BUT, our
flight now showed 17 over sold, apparently the previous flight having been
Plan B, get a cab to the ferry terminal for Dukes Point cost ca$50.00
the saving grace being the ferry ride was free - we are BC seniors you know!
Our neighbour was waiting for us on arrival, and whipped us home in fine
style - the end to our Mediterranean cruise.
